• I have a small suggestion to the developers of this plugin. Perhaps it would be useful, and clear up some confusion, to add a note to the plugin description that WordPress must be installed in the root of the public web path in order to map domains. There’s a lot of info on that page but folks really only need to read that if they pass the prerequisite of having WP installed at the right location.

This is also a very common question in the Multisite Forums. Stuff like:

“How can setup my multisite installation with several domains?”
–> “Do you have multisite installed in /public_html?
    “No it’s installed in /wp/
–> “Then you can’t map domains, at least not with this plugin.”

I see every thread for this plugin (for the last 3-4 years) and do not recall any where someone responded with public_html. The public_html folder is typical of web accounts created with cPanel but I do not know of any other control panels that use it.

You can use domain mapping when WP is installed in a folder as long as the home of the main site is in the root. That change is effective WP 3.4 or 3.5.

Agreed. The home has to be in the root of the website is a limitation of the way http/web browsers work. The DM plugin doesn’t support it because it does not otherwise work.

Adding the note probably would eliminate some threads. However those would be replaced with people asking to have the feature added and/or asking why the plugin doesn’t support it.

IOW, we would be trading thread subjects from folks who are not familiar with the limitations of http/web browsers.

    Good points.

The vast majority of people in the forums seeking help who have multisite in /wp/ have their main domain as domain.com/wp/. Configuring the domain path to be in the root is another step that most don’t seem to do. Also I would say 75+% of those people are using Cpanel.

I guess it’s not really plugin related but rather a good point to include clearly in the documentation. Something along the lines of “if in the future you plan to map domains, make sure it’s installed at the root of your domain.” Etc.

    Happy new year!

And, that needs to be done before multisite is enabled. Most people probably do not look at the DM plugin info/instructions until after they have the multisite part done. Regardless of where we tell them they still have to go back and start over again.
