Just wanted to share this, because it took a while:

If you have connection error in one direction or the other, try going to Settings->permalinks and just re-saving. This will update your permalink structure if needed and might fix 404 errors in the logs of the calling site.

    Hi @sergiomarchesini !
Thank you for sharing – it’s a common issue indeed.
The plugin does call flush_rewrite_rules() upon activation but it seems it’s done inconsistently (and it cannot be called too often because it’s a costly operation). This is fairly low in the list of priority at the moment because it’s better it’s called too rarely than too often, and it is easily fixed by visiting the permalinks page (so I’ll mark the topic as “solved”).

I’m going to stick this topic for reference to other users because it can be very useful – thanks again for bringing it up!

    Thanks Sergio and Alex.

For one site, I turned off all plugins except WP Remote Users Sync, then turned them back on and that got rid of 404’s. I suppose one of those plugins called flush_rewrite_rules().

Then came across this sticky and this solved the issue for me for the other site.
    Chapeau!
