Suggestions and BWPS 4.0

  • Hi everyone,

    Thank you all for the support of this plugin! I am working hard on the next major release which I hope to have out by WordCamp Miami in early April. So far I have the folloing on the feature list:

    * Import-export function
    * Better division of basic/advanced options
    * Two-factor auth
    * Admin action logging
    * Improved documentation and commenting
    * Improved performance of existing features
    * A new way of providing support

    As for the latter, it’s no secret that I haven’t been monitoring these forums often and, frankly, I do not plan to change that in the future. What I will be moving to will be a paid support option similar to the models in place by W3 Total Cache and other plugins. In this scenario the forums themselves will continue to function as a community supported knowledge base with this single suggestions thread monitored by me.

    In addition, if anyone would like to contribute features, code, etc I am in particular need of IIS compatibility as I don’t have the experience with IIS to add it myself. I’ve moved development of the project to GitHub at https://github.com/ChrisWiegman/Better-WP-Security and will gladly include any provide patches or additions while providing proper recognition to those who contribute.

    Finally, Please keep your comments in this thread to suggestions only. If you are stuck search the forums, look at the faq, or get in touch with me outside of the forums. I’ve been hard at work providing free support to anyone who asks and I do not plan on changing that model until the 4.0 comes out.

  • It would be great if you could add some additional fields to the backups page so we could customize the date, subject, and filename of the emailed backups. We manage many sites with the plugin and have the backups emailed to a common address and save the files from there. Having more descript filenames and subjects would streamline the process and prevent confusion since currently all the file names are database-backup-timestamp.zip.

    We use your plugin on many sites and really love it!

    Possible examples are:
    Date:
    mm/dd/yy
    dd/mm/yyyy
    yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss

    Filename:
    domain.com_backup_timestamp.zip
    where timestamp = the date format

    Subject line:
    domain Backup timestamp

    Would be nice to have the option for backups to be both emailed and saved.
    i.e. You could set it up to have an email backup every 3 days and a backup save every week.

    I would recommend an adjustment to the Hide functionality:

    Rather than redirection to /not_found, it should return 403 Forbidden. (Less load on server, less information given to hacker.)

    Love this plugin! Would suggest a fix to enabling/disabling the Lockout Notifications. Currently you cannot turn them off. Please see: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/site-lockout-notification-become-annoying

    I love this plugin, but I really think it needs to have a revert to default button. I imagine being able to revert to the state of the system just after BWPS was installed would be very helpful for troubleshooting and might save you some support woes too. I have looked at the “what is changed” page and it looks a bit daunting to have to revert all that manually even for a pro. Right now I am troubleshooting an unrelated problem and I need to take all plugins out of the picture but deactivating it is not giving me what I need – I have also messed up BWPS settings in the past and reverting to default is not really possible.
