I’ve just used Duplicator for the first time after watching a couple of videos of how to use it.

First of – it comes across as a really well thought through and executed project and I’m impressed by your care in providing a knowledgebase etc.

    Thank-you!

I have had problems however and feel that an addition to documentation could be worthwhile. I hope I haven’t missed it (tried reading through).

I did not realise that Duplicator would reset .htaccess. I understand the reasoning and that it makes sense now, but this seems an big omission from the FAQs?

I’d used security plugins to make permissions changes locally, but need to redo those. I’m no expert on htaccess, but looking through my local version cannot see anything which is specific to that server and would not work on the hosted production site (all seems to be relative paths and wildcards).

It would be great to see something which summarises what Duplicator does and does not do so that the manual steps involved in a migration are clearer. I apologise if this is in one of your videos which I’ve not had a chance to look through yet.

I have doubts at the moment because I’m not sure whether htaccess is the only thing changed by the process.

    Thanks
    Stuart

  • Hey Stuart,

Yes the only things reset are the .htaccess file. The wp-config.php and database tables are updated. There should be a backup of the original .htacess file named .htaccess.bak.

On the last step of the installer there is a message that reads:

The .htaccess file was reset. Resave plugins that write to this file.

We can look at making that more pronounced, we’ll add some notes to the FAQ as well.

    Cheers~

Thanks Cory – I missed that message at the end. Good to know that everything else should stay the same.

In my case, I was migrating a site for the first time and once the site was on the host, it was giving difficult to diagnose errors – hence trying to track down any variations between development environment and live.

In my case I just went through my security plugin settings again to do hardening which was implemented through .htaccess and everything else worked well in the end.

So Duplicator definitely did a great job overall.
    Thanks
    Stuart

Thanks Stuart! The plugin for most parts does a pretty good job, there are just some items that will require manual adjustments unfortunately at this point, but we are always working to improve it.

    Cheers~
