Surge in Page Requests

My client is using this plugin on their site and when activated our GT Metrix performance score is terrible. We went from an avg page load time of 5.4 seconds (2.9mbs) to 10.8 seconds (8.15mbs) and our page requests jumped from 168 to a whopping 420. It was so bad that it brought down our VPS server.
Do we have this configured wrong or is there a way to reduce the server requests? The clients likes this plugin but if we cannot fix these issues it will have to go.
