Surprised by new page

  • I have a WP site that only has (had) one page that I set up as a ‘coming soon’

    Today, opened my email ad found an automated not from my site telling me there is a new page awaiting my approval.

    How is it possible for someone to create a new page on my site? I am the only one with admin rights and comments are turned off on the only page I have.

  • It’s possible your site has been hacked, and that the hacker just tried to create a page. If you look in your dashboard, can you see the post/page that the email is referring to?

    Yes as well as the email of the person who created it. I deleted the page. Wonder how someone would hack my site?

    I’ve seen many situations where people forgot to turn off “open” subscriptions, and then everyone will be able to register for an account. It happens.

    Unless you’re absolutely 100% sure you locked it, of course. In that case, a hacker found its way in some way or another!

    That could very well be the case. I have never heard of open subscriptions so I need to learn about it and how to turn it off.

    In case it is not obvious, I am a raw beginner in WordPress.

    Settings – General – uncheck “Anyone can register”

    Not checked so they must have gained entry some other way. Would they have to guess the admin username and password? I could certainly make that more complex.

    That’s possible. Brute force logins try all kinds of logins/passwords until they get in. It’s not uncommon!
