• Hi to all….why did i ever get in bed with frontpage 2002??!…there werent that many options way back when i built the site with my 16 yr old son…8 years or so ago

we make a living from our site but it is so primitive and slow and non searchable and just has to go….but its huge and so many pictures and pages… https://www.magicmud.com

i even added a blogger blog to the site to try and keep abreast of the times but really must admit i think entire site has to be transferred to word press so i can be found better and do so many other great things that wp and its plug ins enable…

but how to do..?….and will i be able to keep my old links?… do i just 301 or whatever permanently redirect the old links to new urls on wordpress?…
just copy and paste every page 1 by 1?… what about that weird squirelly frontpage code?…ive read paste every page into a text editor 1 by 1 and get rid of weird frontpage code….

any suggestions ?…am not a total newb but am no html writer or code wrangler

also my entire family income depends on this site so really dont want to shoot myself in the foot but killing my links etc…

because of that i have also already bought another domain and have a wordpress theme installed and am trying to build another totally new site in case i cant make the switch with my old site… https://www.customweddingcaketoppers.com
but am still trying to learn how to work with wordpress theme so really just barely taken any steps with it yet

so in my usual confusing way sort of 2 questions… can i transfer old site https://www.magicmud.com to wordpress

or should i just let it be and rebuild a new site at my new domain https://www.customweddingcaketoppers.com

apologize for length of inquiry and my denseness ??

  • Try a plugin like: https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/import-html-pages/

As your site may not have a standard structure, it is possible that the import may not be complete. Still I believe it can help you in accomplishing most of what you want. If it does not suit you, look for another plugin in the plugins directory.

Note: Don’t try on a live site, but use a test site or on your local WordPress install. When you are satisfied with the results, you can easily transfer the site to your live site.

Also look for opinions of other members who have done similar work.

    Hi Krishna
thanks for that tip…i am scouring around on the forums reading the experiences and exploits of others in the same situation… i think that you are correct in that plugin may help….am a bit concerned that the frontpage generated html isnt “true” html but rather microsftsofts own html, but only trying it out will tell…

    appreciate your guidance… Hunter

Good luck with the conversion. It might be that your going to have to hand move everything. Moving from something like Frontpage to WordPress I did soooo many years ago with my own site ( https://www.casketcrew.com ) and it was a BEAST! I had to copy & paste everything from pages, to the news posts and dive into the editor and look at code till my eyeballs spun in their sockets (okay it just FELT that way)!

If your super tech savvy then I would build a dev site on your own computer and try to blow things up that way. ?? It’s so much more fun. And that is how I learn things, blow em up then figure out how to fix it. Hmmmm maybe I should’ve been a mad scientist!

Or you could just build a new one and learn as you go. Take some of the images from the old and build up. And if you really want to 301 redirects aren’t a bad idea if you’re super worried about SEO.

I’d be VERY cautious about copying any code from MS Frontpage – you are correct that it’s likely to be full of obsolete and non-compliant code. Unless you can find a plugin or conversion tool that will fix that, copying just plain text content and images may be the best way to go, IMHO.

Yeah I ended up having to just take whatever text/audio/video I could find that I wanted to keep for content and leave all the coding behind with my old site.

It’s not hard to manually copy too. I just copied the front page and pasted into the visual editor of my local install for testing. It came with all html, more or less similar to the site. If the site is not too large, the entire site can be copied quickly, with images, links, etc. Then its a question of just checking the formatting, or whatever adjustments you need and redirecting (301).

    Hi carrie and WPyogi
yes im think that this is a case of severe copy and pasting… really will probably come down to taking the time to do it all by hand … thanks for your input…
