• Hi everybody,

I am currently developing my site on a temporary URL at BLuehost. This can be found here: https://69.195.124.244/~escapol1/

Now I would like to import my existing blog content and switch over to my original URL which is https://escapology.eu.

As you can see, the images I am using right now, are using the path of the temp url. My question if this will change automatically once I switch nameservers and change the URL in the WordPress Admin Panel (Settings). Or will I need to do more tweaks here? Or will I even have to re-upload all these images and change the URL manually?

I just want to have a smooth transition but I am really unsure about this.

    Thanks a lot.

  • Hi there, I would recommend following these steps to ensure a smooth transition. You might also consider backing up the site as well before you switch things over for safe measure. Hope this helps.

    Hi there,
the link confuses me more than anything else. And it doesn’t really relate to the specifics of my question.

To my knowledge, I need to do the follwong steps.

    1. Import content
    2. Switch nameservers at registrar
    3. Change URL in the WP Admin Panel via Settings

The question is, if this ensures that the pictures I am currently using on my dev site will be properly displayed afterwards or if I will have to manually change them.

    Thanks for your help, Philipp

You can get a plugin to rewrite image URL’s after moving your installation, but I am prettyy sure if you use a plugin like Duplicator to move sites, that it does it all as part of the installation, I cant remember exactly though

So I take it by doing the above three steps, the image URLs will still be the ones used on the dev site and not change. Is that correct?

For example the image of me on the top of the sidebar has the following URL now: https://69.195.124.244/~escapol1/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Foto_neu.jpg

After the switch it should probably be this: https://escapology.eu/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Foto_neu.jpg

This I will have to do manually or will it be done automatically after I pointed my URL to Bluehost?

If you do it manually yep, the URL’s wont change. So you would have to manually change it.

By using the duplicator plugin, it does it all for you

    Hi there,

now I am really confused. I chatted with the Bluehost Support yesterday and they said, that all the image URLs will most probably get updated with switch / redirect and no work has to be done afterwards.

What’s right here? I don’t want to mess with Duplicator if I don’t have to because it seems fairly complex and I am not a tachnical (as you guys can probably tell by my questions here ??

Ok. what I meatn (and i might have confused matters here) is that URL’s that are used within the site will not get updated (as in throughout settings if you have specified images, on pages, in posts etc)

Whereas if its just the media library that then it should get updated, but when you then delete the old site and look through the pages, and images you have used that are specified using url’s, wont update to the new URL (that i know of, i have only ever used duplicator to move a site as its so easy)

Maybe someone else can clarify here?

That’s what I mean. Right now, if yu check out my dev site, you can see a few images like my profile pic and social media icons. These have been uploaded into the mediabank and the url for them right now is the one of the dev site.

If I now import all of my content from wordpress.com, there will be hundreds of more images which will get imported into the media library.

So once I switch over, will this automatically be changed? I am not even sure if I am using the right terms here. Do you guys kinda understand what I mean?

I honestly dont know. But even if they dont, as I said, there is 1 plugin out there that you can specify a replace of URL’s. SO if they dont change, you run the plugin and it rewrites the old URL’s to the new URL. Takes seconds also.

Basically just a glorified find and replace tool.

    Hopefully that makes sense
