I help run a multisite WordPress network. The normal person who does most of the administration of the multisite is currently on leave and I’m trying to figure things out so forgive my ignorance.

A user who uses this plugin has reported that they are no longer able to switch back and forth from the Block Editor and the Classic Editor. I’ve tested and confirmed that in the Classic Editor the Editor option on the sidebar in the Post/Page editing screen is no longer appearing. I’ve tried disabling all the plugins I could (I’ve kept the network active CAPTCHA, Anti-spam, and other security plugins in place) and I’ve tried switching between a few different themes and this does not seem to resolve the issue.

I know the ability to switch between editors is dependent on the network setting “Classic Editor: allow site admin to change settings” but I could not find this setting in our Network Settings area.

We are on WordPress version 6.5.3 and plugin version 1.6.3.

Hey @auringerj – this sounds like a tricky one.

If you go to the Classic Editor Settings (or Settings > Writing) for a specific site – do you have the usual settings allowing you to enable/disable the default editor experience and option to switch between them?

I’m not sure where to find the Classic Editor Settings or if they are different than the Writing Settings but the option to allow users to switch editors is not appearing in the Writing Settings for a specific site. I only get options for Formatting, Default Post Category, and Default Post Format.

Hi @auringerj if you go to the Network Settings for the multisite – do you see anything equivalent there?

It looks like it should be possible to let users manage that setting following the instructions in this forum thread.

In the Network Settings for the multisite I do not have the “Allow site admins to change settings” option.

On that thread you have linked, andresgrossmann did say that you first had to “Network Enable it”. By this do they mean that I have to Network Activate the plugin?

We don’t want to network activate the plugin on our multisite as we want to encourage users to use the Block Editor. Currently on our multisite users have to email us and we will manually activate the plugin on individual sites. Users do not have the ability to activate plugins on their own.

Is the only way to allow users to swap between the Classic Editor and Block Editor to network activate the plugin on every user’s site?

Yes that would be correct – it would need to be network activated.

Ah yes – I can totally understand that (and find it admirable).

It does look like that would be the only way to do so – yes.
