• Bought my domain and www.ads-software.com subscription through GoDaddy. Downloaded database backup files and copied all language and images to new website on Squarespace. Just moved the domain there, and now cannot access my WordPress Admin dashboard (www.myurl.org/wp-admin)

Any suggestions for how to get it back?

    Thanks!!

You’ll have to decide what you want at the domain, and therefore where you want to point it to. Do you want it to go to Squarespace, where your Squarespace blog is, or GoDaddy, where your WordPress blog is?

You can’t have both under the same domain in this case.

You need to access your database on the new host and in the WP-Options table, make sure the domain name settings, in the first two rows, are correct. Sometimes, moving domains around, I change those, and then you can’t login – using wp-admin – because it’s redirecting you to the old location.

Also – have you tried accessing either the first installation, on Godaddy, or the Squarespace install, via an IP address?

Did you change your DNS A-record in Godaddy’s domain manager to point to the new location?

Those are all I got ??

MacManX: I want the website to point to Squarespace, but we were wondering if it would still be possible to access the WordPress Dashboard for editing our site there even if we don’t have the original domain pointing to it?

Trident60: Yes, I changed the DNS A-record in GoDaddy’s domain manager to point to Squarespace, because that is what I want. I don’t understand your second suggestion regarding “accessing the first installation?” I was just wondering if it’s possible to access the wp-admin dashboard at a different URL, and if so, how to set that up?

Sorry for being confusing – I’m just moving a lot of sites around myself at the moment – by “first installation” I simply meant accessing it where it was first installed. I was assuming you had this site running on Godaddy servers and then copied/moved it to Squarespace. But left the original install still sitting on Godaddy’s servers.

Is that the case – was the website up and running on Godaddy? Did you delete that installation? This is in response to your “how to get it back” question.

But yes, if I understand correctly (I’m not familiar witgh Squarespace), you just moved your hosting from Godaddy to Squarespace, yes? And then changed your A-record. If that’s the case it is definitely possible to access the WP-admin dashboard from your new URL. So your site is running WordPress on Squarespace servers?

Sorry Yogi – the only thing I’m thinking of is to ensure your url settings, in the wp-options table of your database are correct.

And, if I totally confused you, and you still have that installation on Godaddy, you can simply change your A-record back and you should be able to get into fine.

Trident60: I very much appreciate your thoughtful explanations!

Squarespace has its own CMS and hosting servers, so no, I am not running anything related to WordPress on Squarespace.

We bought the domain from GoDaddy, and also set up our www.ads-software.com account via GoDaddy. So GoDaddy is still hosting our domain, but we have the DNS pointing to Squarespace. I don’t think I “deleted the first installation” on GoDaddy’s servers, but maybe I did by moving where the domain points.

I don’t think I can access what you’re referring to as the “wp-options table of my database.” Frankly I don’t really understand what that means. I understand how to change A-records via GoDaddy, but I don’t want any complications to arise with Squarespace if I have 1 of the A-records pointing to a /wp-admin page.

Hope that clears it up a little? Let me know if you have any other suggestions. Thanks again!

    Ah – I think I understand ??

Essentially you have two websites running – a WordPress site on Godaddy and your Squarespace site. The Squarespace site is not running WordPress so you will not be able to log into that site using “yourdomain.com/wp-admin” because “yourdomain.com” is not running WordPress – it’s on Squarespace.

So do you want to run your site using WordPress or Squarespace?

If you’re going to keep your domain name pointed to Squarespace there is no WordPress dashboard involved.

If you want to run your site on WordPress then there is no need for Squarespace ??

And, like I said, you can simply change the dns record to point your domain back to the Godaddy servers and your WordPress login/dashboard – the whole site – should still be there.

A domain can only point to one hosting provider at a time.

You can’t host WordPress on Squarespace, which means that if your domain is in use on Squarespace, you won’t be able to use your WordPress site.

You can set a subdomain to point to GoDaddy, or get a new domain for your WordPress blog, but you can’t use the domain itself at Squarespace and GoDaddy simultaneously.

trident60, sorry about that, looks like your reply was in the spam queue.

    Ah – I’m too verbose ??

    Thanks James!
