If nothing else, how can I go back to the previous version of WordPress?

This may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and switch to the default Twenty Twenty theme. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of the problem.

If you can install plugins, install Health Check. On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site.

Thanks James. Turns out that my theme, Twenty Eleven, is not compatible with WordPress 5.5. Managed to revert back to previous version of WordPress. Now considering the cost of upgrading to a new theme…

Here are 7,736 free themes to choose from, no cost: https://www.ads-software.com/themes/browse/new/

Changing a theme is very easy and safe, some folks do it monthly just for fun.

It won’t affect your content, and the most work you’d need to do after switching is spend a minute or two to re-organize widgets and menus.
