I am currently using the default “ugly” setting. I only have 10 posts. I want to switch the permalink settings to Post Name “pretty” and make custom names. When I switch the settings in Permalinks, the posts cannot be found (404) – the links are broken and the posts cannot even be previewed from the admin area. What do I need to do? What step am I missing?

The forum posts I’ve seen on this are old and for someone with limited coding knowledge hard to follow. Thanks.

Find out if your webhost supports mod_rewrite and .htaccess files. See Using Permalinks ? WordPress Codex

I had no .htaccess file, so I uploaded one with the mark-up per the Using_Permalinks page.
Since this changed nothing (links still broken), and my webhost supports mod_rewrite, what other step(s) am I missing?

Ah – I think I got it now. The code on the resource page did not work, BUT the Permalinks page in my admin told me the code to put in and it appears to work now.
