Switching Languages

So far I have managed to place two flags onto my menu – English and Deutsch. The content is currently all in English but when I click Deutsch nothing changes. Before Polylang I had Google Language Translator installed – selecting Deutsch would change all the content in one swoop, the downfall however the dropdown language selection looked ugly in my menu.

Does Polylang fundamentally work the same as Google Translate – can I select Deutsch and the whole site content changes without me having to re-write articles, posts, menus manually in a different language? If so where am I going wrong?
