After installing the latest version of Sydney (1.82) on Thursday last week, I and my site visitors keep getting the white screen of death (“there has been a critical error on your website. Lear more about debugging in WordPress) at least occasionally. It seems to happen more to mobile users but it doesn’t affect everybody. For a couple of times now I’ve disabled Sydney and converted to a default theme and then enabled Sydney again. That seems to take care of the problem for a while. But the problem keeps coming back. I don’t know how to locate the problem and how to fix it. I’m running WP 5.3.2

  • Hi @minfr,

Perhaps it was due to unfinished theme files transfer while updating the theme for unstable network connection.

Please try accessing your site’s directory over FTP/sFTP client to manully update the theme in wp-content/themes directory.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi,

I see the error. You should be getting emails with more details about the error. If you are getting those, can you please post the exact error message from the logs?

You can also try what Kharis suggested about reinstalling the theme manually.

I don’t receive emails with error messages. I know the error says I should but I haven’t received any. I now rolled back the theme to 1.79. I have to look into the manual update. I must admit I’m learning things as I go so I have to find good instructions on how to do this. Thanks for the help thus far.

I ended up updating WP to 5.8.1 via the CPanel and updated Sydney back to 1.81 via the CPanel as well. It seems to be working at least for now.
