download the file and load it into a text editor that has line numbering ??

The quick fix — download a new copy of your theme, extract functions.php, and upload it via FTP replacing the messed up one.

Don’t use the WP dashboard; download via either the file manager in your host’s control panel or via FTP.

I would suggest that you did not really replace the functions.php file.

    Be sure you’re replacing wp-content/themes/twentytwelve/functions.php

Also, it’s a bad idea to edit a twenty* theme as they often get updated. An update will blow away your work. Instead, you should child theme it.

how do i do that ?

    A child theme? https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Child_Themes

To fix your other problem, you could just totally reinstall twentytwelve. Activate another theme, delete twentytwelve, then reinstall.

Now for the why: The internet is a wonderful place full of very nice people and a few very bad ones. I’m sure everyone here is very nice however, by giving some ones keys to your house you are trusting they wont steal anything. Likewise the person who takes the keys is now responsible for the house FOREVER.
