Tag manager only working while logged in the wordpress panel
-
I installed the tag manger with the site kit plugin, connected with my tag manager account, and set up all the tags that I needed. But the tags only works when I’m connect in the wordpress panel, when I log off and when I use a alternative browser, the tags simply doesn’t show.
What can I do?

Thanks for opening a support topic @wondermidia,
From checking your site manually and from using the tagassistant.google.com service (example) I don’t see a standard Tag Manager snippet placed on your site.
As you’re only able to view this while logged in, let’s perform some checks to determine what may be the cause. In order to do so, please follow the steps below:
- Install and activate the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin
- Navigate to “Plugins > Health Check & Troubleshooting > Troubleshoot”.
- From the same screen click on the “Available Plugins” tab at the top right and then click on the “Enable” option next to “Site Kit by Google“.
- Site Kit is the only plugin now enabled for you only (as a logged in administrator). Search your sites source code, and check for the Tag Manager containre snippet
- If the snippet doesn’t appear, share your Site Health information and I can check your site set up. If the snippet does appear, this indicates a third party plugin or theme related issue resulting in the snippet not appearing while logged in. Continue with the steps below to narrow down the cause.
- Back in troubleshooting mode click on the “Enable” option next to any additional plugin one at a time, before then visiting your sites source code once more and checking does the snippet appear (each time). You’ll also need to refresh the source code screen each time.
- One you determine that the snippet no longer appears, you’ll know which plugin has resulted in this behaviour (the last one you enabled via troubleshooting mode above). If you’re unable to determine a plugin is responsible continue below to check your theme.
- Back in troubleshooting mode select a different theme, the theme normally activated on your site.
- Search the source code once mode (Please refresh the page before checking)
- If the snippet no longer appears, this indicates a theme related cause.
Let me know if you need any assistance with any of the steps above.
Hey @jamesosborne , thanks for your answer, I just filled the form.
Many thanks for sharing your Site Health information. Based on you sharing this, and your comments in the form, it sounds like while in troubleshooting mode you couldn’t see your Tag Manager snippet appearing?
If that is the case, let’s check another couple of things. From reviewing your Site Health information I notice you’re using WP Super Cache, which can server static content versions of your site. It’s possible that you may need to refresh your cache. I also noticed the following modules active within Site KIt:
active_modules: site-verification, search-console, pagespeed-insights
As the above modules don’t include Tag Manager, please perform the steps below:
- Temporarily deactivate the WP Super Cache plugin
- Enable the Tag Manager module within Site Kit once more.
- Check for the snippet once more, while letting me know once you’ve performed these steps so I can also check
If the snippet remains non-existent, please also share a screenshot of the snippet as it appears while you are logged in. You can use a service such as Imgur or Jumpshare to share a screenshot, while using the form above to share this privately.?
Hey @jamesosborne I’m having some trouble finding the source code to see if the snippet exists, can you help me with a step by step tutorial? Sorry for the trouble, and thanks again for your help.
(I Temporarily deactivate the WP Super Cache plugin and enabled tag manager but nothings changed.)No problem @wondermidia, happy to assist. You can check your sites source code. In order to check your sites source course you can press?Ctrl+U?(Windows) or??-Option-U?(Mac).
You can then press Ctrl & F to search for the string GTM, which will allow you to view any Tag Manager snippets (if any).
You’ll also see how a Tag Manager snippet appears on your site if placed via Site Kit using this link.
Let me know how you get on with the above, while using the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin.
Thanks! @jamesosborne
While logged in, the snippet exists, I sent in the form the image.- This reply was modified 1 year, 7 months ago by wondermidia.
Excellent, if the snippet exists in troubleshooting mode, then the cause is a third party plugin or your theme. The next steps are to check your sites source code after enabling each plugin one by one, checking each time (as per the steps in my original response above). Let me know if you get stuck on any steps above and I can assist more.
Hey @jamesosborne today i got this error “Error: The response is not a valid JSON response.Retry”
Do you know what I can do?
I saw this post where some people had problens with a specific version of php. i’m thinking maybe the problem is also this, because this website it’s kind old, so its no up to date.
Hi @wondermidia,
That specific error is a generic WordPress error, that usually indicates an issue with your WordPress REST API. See here an example of such as reporting in the fixing WordPress forums. I don’t suspect this is the cause of what you’re encountering. Have you used the Health Check & Troubleshooting above to determine what plugin is responsible, given the snippet appears with only Site Kit active?
I don’t know how to do it, I remember how to active site kit while troubleshooting, and I remeber how to go to code source pressing Windows + u.
Can you explain with more details please? And sorry again, english is not my main language

Not a problem @wondermidia, happy to assist. I’ve added the steps involved below, while including the source code check:
- Ensure the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin is installed and activated.
- Navigate to “Plugins > Health Check & Troubleshooting > Troubleshoot”.
- Click on the “Available Plugins” tab at the top right and then click on the “Enable” option next to “Site Kit by Google“.
- Site Kit is the only plugin now enabled for you only (as a logged in administrator). Search your sites source code, and check for the Tag Manager container snippet (Ctrl+U?(Windows) or??-Option-U?(Mac).).
- You can then press?Ctrl & F?to search for the string?GTM, which will allow you to view any Tag Manager snippets (if any). From what you reported previously, the GTM snippet does appear in troubleshooting mode.
- If the snippet does appear once again, this indicates a third party plugin or theme related issue resulting in the snippet not appearing while logged in.
If you’re unsure of the above, do you have any IT contact or support that can assist you with checking?
Hey! because its a little old version of wordpress I believe thats its a little different, but I was able to troubleshot and enable a plugin each time. But I don’t know if was actually troubeshooting. Example: When I had no plugins activated, the site was still up and the tag manager snippet was still at the site.
I was logged in as administrator and refreshed the page, was there anything else to do? @jamesosborneThanks for the update.
Example: When I had no plugins activated, the site was still up and the tag manager snippet was still at the site.
Is the above while in troubleshooting mode? If so, then you are likely using a different theme, with troubleshooting mode switching to a core WordPress theme. The issue may very well be theme related. When checking your site at present (obviously without using troubleshooting mode) I don’t see any Tag Manager container.
Please check for the snippet while switching themes in troubleshooting mode, as per the steps suggested above (steps, 9, 10 and 11).
Note also that this doesn’t seem to be a Site Kit specific issue, as your Tag Manager snippet doesn’t seem to be inserted via Site Kit. You can use the Tag Manager Help Center for further assistance on this, with the product experts more equipped to deal with general Tag Manager related issues than we are here in Site Kit support.
As we didn’t receive a response I’ll mark this as resolved. Feel free to open a new support topic if you continue to encounter issues, or reopen this topic and we’d be happy to assist.
