I had added 4 groups and was able to assign them without issue (roughly 25 tags total). I added two new groups and changed the name of two of the original four and now attempting to assign existing tags or creating new tags results in a “Tag Not Updated” message at the top of the screen. None of the tags I try and assign are actually put into groups. I tried resetting my server as well, to no avail.

I also tried assigning the tag to a group from the main tag screen using the “bulk action” from that page. The resulting message was, “The term has been assigned to the group Software.” (that was the group I was trying to assign). However looking at the tag’s detail page it was not actually assigned.

    Any other tips?

OK, this has to be one of the weirdest errors I have ever had. This happens SPECIFICALLY when I created the tag “GitHub” and tried to assign it to a group. I wiped everything out, reinstalled, deleted all my old tags (not sure how to scrub the data anymore than that). Methodically started adding tags back in (things like “Resistor” “Capacitor” and other electronic components). When I added the tag “GitHub”, I once again get the message “Tag not updated.” (which appears to be a WordPress error message, but doesn’t show up when I deactivate the plugin and add a GitHub tag).

Trying things like “BritHub” and “guthib” seem to work. Am I going nutso?

Ah no, I may have spoken too soon. Upon adding that devilish “GitHub” term, it appears that none of the groups are showing on the Tags page (in the next columns over from the tag name and slug). However, the Tag Groups admin page does still show the same number of tags being assigned as before, so perhaps there is some screwy interaction on edit.tags.php.

This sounds strange indeed. Could you please check if you have used “GitHub” as a category name?

    Some more things to try:

    • When you disable the plugin, do you see more categories and/or tags?
    • Is it possible to rename BritHub to GitHub?

    • Checked and there definitely is not a category named GitHub.
    • I don’t see anymore tags/categories when the plugin is disabled.
    • Attempting to rename the tag “Brithub” to “GitHub” is met with the same “Tag not updated” message. Changing the tag “Soldering” to “SolderingStuff” definitely works though. Also changing “Brithub” to “Bruthib” works fine, as does changing the category. ??

I know this is a weird error. It seems like other things have gone back to “normal” since i don’t have a GitHub tag anymore. Hopefully this helps in troubleshooting.

Thanks, I will take a deeper look later if I can find anything unusual. I assume that GitHub (or the slug) must appear somewhere unless we found a paranormal phenomenon. (Any recent UFO sightings nearby? ?? )

I ran into this again. I tried updating via the “Quick Edit” and it gave some different messages after I saw the “tag not update” message at the top of the screen. First it prompted me that “The slug ________ is already in use by another term”. OK. I go and change it to something else (the term was thermocouples so I switched the slug to thermocouple) and it gave the error “Security Check”.

Does that help to figure out what the potential issue might be? I have been able to add other tags no problem. Do I need to go in and clear out old tags?

Further info: this actually seems more “system level”. Whatever set this off now will not allow me to assign any tag, not just “thermocouples”. I did delete and move some of the groups around. I also changed the text size for the tag cloud widget.

For now it seems like I’m stuck with the tags that I have already assigned. After this happened last time I ended up wiping everything out and starting over (and it started allowing me to assign tags once again). Hopefully that’s not the only resolution.

Hi Chris, just to let you know that I keep the issue in mind and will follow up later. Currently I don’t have any new ideas where to search. In case I manage to fix it, I’ll post it here.

There is a chance that this problem has been solved in the latest WP maintenance release 4.1.1

Hunh, I think that may have done it!

I’ll keep an eye on it and let you know if I’m not able to add tags to groups. As of right now though, I was just able to add “Git” to an existing group (among others).

    Yep, more verified.

Thanks for keeping on top of this, I appreciate it!

    Great, thanks!
