I am trying to debug a purchase event script with the tag assistant, but I don’t want to do it on the live site. I have created a new data stream in Analytics for my staging site and Site Kit says it’s installed, but the script is not appearing in the source code on the page and tag assistant can’t connect to it.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

Thanks for getting in touch @chillifish. From checking your site at present I don’t see any Analytics snippet based. Based on this if you’d like to share your Site Health information I can check your Site Kit configuration.

I also noticed some optimizations performed, possibly via your SG Optimizer plugin, and this may be impacting any snippet placed. If this is the case you may wish to temporarily deactivate any Optimization plugin before checking for your snippets once more.

Thanks. I’ve filled in that info. I don’t have any optimisations running through the SG Optimizer plugin, it’s installed to stop their internal caching so I can see changes immediately. It could be something on Siteground’s side I guess.

Thanks for the update @chillifish. All looks good from reviewing your Site Kit configurations and I also don’t spot anything unusual from your environment such as your active plugins.

While you’ve confirmed that you didn’t apply any optimizations via SG Optimizer, would it be possible for you to temporarily deactivate this plugin while I check your site once more? I ask as I wonder if some features when connected with your hosting platform are automatically enabled as you’ve suggested. I’ll also perform some testing with the same plugin on a test Site Kit hosted website in the meantime.

Another check you may wish to perform is disconnecting the Analytics module within Site Kit before connecting once more.

Let me know if you do decide to temporarily deactivate SG Optimizer and I’ll review your site, after which you can enable once more.

Thanks, I’ve reset Site Kit and disabled the Optimizer plugin, but it doesn’t seem to have worked. I’ll leave it disabled until you’ve had a look.

Thanks for the update @chillifish. I also checked your site and as with you, I don’t see any snippet placed. You can enable SG Optimizer once more now while I performed some checks on my side with an environment similar to your own.

If you wish to perform some additional troubleshooting while I’m checking this, please follow the steps below. This can help rule out theme, functions, or plugin related issues resulting in the snippet not appearing.

    1. Login to your live site from a Chrome browser incognito window.
    2. Install and activate the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin.
    3. Navigate to “Plugins > Health Check & Troubleshooting > Troubleshoot”.
    4. From the same screen click on the “Available Plugins” tab at the top right and then click on the “Enable” option next to “Site Kit by Google“.
    5. Check for the snippet placed on your site once more

Let me know how you get on with the above, or ask if you have any questions.

Thanks. I’ve done all that and Site Kit appears to be outputting lots of markup on the front end, but not the tag.

Thanks for checking this @chillifish. When you mention it’s putting markup on the front end, users would typically see an Analytics snippet placed as per this guide on the plugin website. In your case can you share the markup you see in troubleshooting mode? It’s possible your Analytics snippet is behind a Google tag id.

Feel free to share a recording of what you’re seeing in your sites source code in troubleshooting mode. You can use a service such as Loom or RecordIt to share a screen recording, while using the same form previously used to share this privately.?

Note also that the fact that you are seeing the Site Kit comments or other markup while in troubleshooting mode indicates a third party plugin or theme related issue. Hopefully with a little more troubleshooting we can determine the cause.

As we didn’t receive a response I’ll mark this as resolved. Feel free to open a new support topic if you continue to encounter issues, or reopen this topic and we’d be happy to assist.

I suspect it’s a Siteground issue as it was deploying all markup except the analytics snippet. I deployed the code to the live site and it worked fine, so I didn’t bother going through all that on the staging site. Frustratingly unresolved, but I’m not doing all that if I’m not being paid for it!

You may be on to something @chillifish! If you do wish for us to check your experience feel free to share your experience via a recording with the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin and we’d be happy to investigate further. Regardless, best of luck!
