TAX is always zero during checkout

Based on your screenshot, it looks like you currently have it set to “Disable automated taxes”:

If you switch that to “Enable automated taxes” and save your settings, do you see any taxes calculated at Checkout?

Just to clarify one point: by default, the WooCommerce Tax and Shipping extension is able to handle a single “tax nexus” (based on your shop’s base address), and calculates tax based on that. There’s more information about this in the documentation here:

If you test with a shipping address that is in the same state as your shop, do you see taxes calculated as expected?

If you are certain you need to calculate tax in other states because you have tax nexus in multiple states, then another option would be the WooCommerce AvaTax extension, which is a good option for automated taxes & multiple tax nexuses.

I have a similar issue. I “Enable automated taxes” and click the save button, but it does not save.

Glad to hear you were able to get it working!

@nhof, it sounds like your issue was that tax at checkout is zero — however, you didn’t mention being unable to save the setting. If you switch the setting to “enabled”, do you see taxes calculated in your home state?

If you are also unable to save the setting, you could be seeing a conflict with other plugins as well — in that case, I would recommend conflict testing: https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/how-to-test-for-conflicts/

@kellymetal I can save the setting, but I still receive 0 EU tax during checkout.
This is for Belgium, where the tax should be 21% for the whole country.

Could you please confirm that under WooCommerce > Settings > Tax, the option “Enable Automated Taxes” is enabled?

Also, would you be able to try manually removing the rule indicated on your screenshot: https://imgur.com/S7GpALt and go through checkout again with automated taxes enabled? Does that indicate the correct taxes or does the tax stay at 0?

Lastly, could you please confirm what country is set as your store location?

Thanks for your reply. Can you please do the following:

* Update your database: Your Systems Status report indicates that your database is out of sync with the version of the WooCommerce plugin you’re currently using. Before updating your database, please make sure you have full backups of your site! To update your database, head to WooCommerce > Status > Tools and click the ‘Update database’ button.

Note that Automated Taxes will ignore any manual tax rates added, which is why the rule wasn’t being respected when automated taxes was enabled. If you’d prefer to set up manual taxes rather than using automated taxes, you can learn more about this here: https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/setting-up-taxes-in-woocommerce/

Automated taxes should correctly calculate taxes for Belgium and within the EU. If, after updating your database, you are still running into problems using the Automated Tax setting, please reply back with a screenshot of your Tax Settings page with automated taxes enabled.

Hi @nhof,

Thanks for sending the status report. I wasn’t able to reproduce the problem using Belgium as the base address and enabling automated taxes through the WooCommerce Tax plugin. Can you please do a conflict test, deactivating all plugins besides WooCommerce and WooCommerce Tax and temporarily activating the Storefront theme? Then, test for taxes at checkout. If taxes are shown there, re-enable plugins one at a time until you find the one causing the problem.
