I am trying to set up an online store where out of all the products, only two categories of products are exempt from taxation in MA and NY. All other products are taxable in all states, and the two MA and NY exempt products can be taxable in all other states. We are using TaxJar to automatically calculate our tax rates and apply them during checkout. However, we’re not having much luck trying to find a way to control taxable products down to the category and state. It seems the automatic rate table assumes that all products are taxable in all US states unless specified not. Is there a way to work with the product categories and tax rates to account for these exemptions?

    Hey @coolhatwebdesign

This looks like TaxJar supports this type of classification – https://support.taxjar.com/article/432-video-how-do-i-exempt-a-product-in-woocommerce – as long as the tax rates are standard.

That video is older but it does explain the exact scenario you’re looking for – as long as the products have the correct tax class, they will be taxes accordingly.

If you’re having trouble with it – you’ll want to speak to TaxJar who offer support with their plugin.

If your classification of these products being tax exempt in certain states isn’t “official” then you will need to code up a specific solution for this.

    Thanks,

    Hi @coolhatwebdesign

We haven’t heard back from you in a while, so I’m going to mark this as resolved – if you have any further questions, you can start a new thread.

    Thanks
