Taxonomy term in single-custom-post URL?

    Hello! I have a CPT ‘snack’ with a custom tax ‘snack_category’ and am trying to accomplish exactly what this post describes:

    I inherited the site, and right now, in CPTUI, Rewrite is set to true for my post type and the custom taxonomy, with the rewrite slug set to ‘snacks’ for both.

    At the risk of getting too confusing, the old site owner had, instead of using a taxonomy, made the post type hierarchical, and made all posts child posts of a parent to create the individual post URLs with the (fake) tax term in them. When I remove the parent/child relationship from the individual posts, everything breaks.

    I can post some more specifics or get you login creds – let me know whats most helpful. Is the following plugin you recommend something that might sort this out?

    The detail about both the post type and the taxonomy having the same slug, I could see potentially causing some odd query issues for you, however, at least at the moment, it’s seems to have visually avoided that.

    I can also see how the hierarchical post type and child posts achieving decent enough results. However, that does present the disconnect between post archive and term archive.

    For what it’s worth, with that stackoverflow post, I’ve never been a fan of suggestions about changing rewrite slugs to be something like “shows/%show_category%” or similar, because it’s putting rewrite placeholders in places they do not belong.

    I know I have definitely recommended that custom post type permalinks plugin in the past, and have it favorited with my .org account here. Worth installing and tinkering around with to see what sort of results you get. That said, I would also strongly recommend trying it out on a local/development copy of the site instead of whatever is live and visit-able.

    Custom Post Type UI itself doesn’t have any permalink customization functionality built into it, outside of the “slug” parameters for post type and taxonomy registration.
