• I was running WP 2.6 on 4 blogs, and using /%category%/%postname%/ as my custom permalink structure and a static home page, with blog posts going to another page called “weblog”

i upgraded all 4 blogs to 2.7 and now my /%category%/%postname%/ structure will not work, i get 404 errors on every page and post – even when they appear in the archive and catagory links in the sidebar

I even tried a completely new installation, and before I imported my data bvack in i tested the /%category%/%postname%/ structure and it doesn’t work.. 404 errors constantly.

I can only get the lnks to work if i choose the default permalink structure and that is not desirable

    can anyone help? please?

    much appreciated . JF

this all worked fine in 2.6 , it’s only since i did an install of 2.7 that i have this problem

and don;t worry about the access – i’m happy to give you access if you can help me – this is a nightmare

without getting in there i’m at a loss honestly. maybe wait and see if anyone else has anything to try before granting access to some dude on the internet. ??

it’s up to you… i’ll be more than happy to get in there and see what I can see.

I use /%category%/%postname%/ on one of my 2.7 blogs and it works just fine, so it’s not a general issue with this particular permalink structure and 2.7.

    here’s the thing..

4 blogs all working fine with /%category%/%postname%/

    upgrade to 2.7 – doesn’t work

backup data, wipe it clean and do a virgin install – doesn’t work

now all my blogs (bar the one i’m testing fixes on) are running ugly permalinks, and all my external links are broken ??

reinstalled 2.6 on 1 blog this morning to validate that something hasn’t changed on my server at the hosting company, and it works fine

I still think it’s your .htaccess file.
Depending on the editor you used there could be some hidden characters in there causing issues with your custom permalinks. Makes sense why ugly works fine.

I just sent you an email of my .htaccess… try and use this one on yours. I know this file works, works for me. set permissions to 777.

ok, waiting for the email to arrive…

i used the editor in cpanel

    (@johnpfranks)

uploaded your .htaccess file .. 404 errors are still there

    changed back to default permalinks

    uploaded .htaccess file again

    changed to custom permalinks /%category%/%postname%/

checked .htaccess (correct entries still there)

    404 errors are still there

    I’m at a loss man.

did you change the permissions for the file to 777?

    Thread Starter johnpfranks

    (@johnpfranks)

    yes, changed to 777

This issue should be escalated, seems like people are having similar issues all over the place .. “404 issues”

i guess I have to back out to 2.6 again … 7 days work ..not happy

svsdnb – Thanks for the personal touch though, appreciate that you tried
