• Hello,
I hope someone can help. Someone asked me to create a website for them on WordPress, like the one I’d created for myself, which I duly did. Only afterwards did they say they wanted to move it. The guy who looks after their hosting and domain name contacted me with this:

Just realised this has been created on wordpress.com and not on www.ads-software.com.

I have had a quick look at the transfer process and looks like we may have issues on the template and plugins

Yes I was right. I can move the content, but not the theme or plugins – I need FTP access to do that.

I have done it via plugins in the past, but again no options to add a “migrate plugin” to move the complete site.

You may have to ask them for a complete package of the site so I can set it up.

I have no idea what to do next. I only set up this site as asked. Should I re-create the site on www.ads-software.com or is there another way? Sorry for being clueless, I’m completely new to this.

    Many thanks.

  • Rather than download/upload the files for the plugins and theme you would be better off to login to the WordPress admin dashboard and use the theme and plugin managers to find and install the theme and plugins from the online resources. Just maybe some of them are paid in which case you will have to do this too.
I would be surprised if there are any plugins or theme available in wordpress.com that are not in the repositories.

Thanks Ross. My guy just came back and said

“All I need is the template and the plugin files – unless they give you a complete backup of the files which includes them and then I can restore to the correct places on my server.”

Which ties in with what you’ve said. I’ll try what you’ve suggested. Thank you.

    Lisa
