• I just transferred over a website from a local server to live. The site is running on Twenty Seventeen theme with no custom templates or major changes. Page attributes is showing but the template drop down is missing. I’ve downloaded a different theme and it shows up but any wordpress twenty whatever theme the template drop down is missing. I’ve deleted and imported a fresh twenty seventeen theme and it’s still missing. Everything seems to be there & I haven’t modified any files. So i’m out of ideas but I need the template options back!

Can you screenshot the template drop down from other themes, to clarify which section is missing?

When I go to a page or create a new page there is no option for page templates under page attributes so I can’t set the page as full width, blog, side bar etc. If I switch to twenty sixteen or fifteen the problem is still there. If I switch to a theme developed by someone else the page template drop down shows up. Switch back to twenty seventeen it’s gone again.

Not sure how to attach a screen shot sorry

The reason is because these default WordPress themes do not have any templates. If you were to look in the theme folder, you won’t see a “page-templates” folder. For third part themes, most will have custom templates added. This is one of the reasons I added templates to my child themes for the 2015, 2016, and 2017 themes.

I had page templates when I built it locally. Same theme. These included full width page, side bar left, side bar right, etc

Were you using a child theme or the Twenty Seventeen theme? The Twenty Seventeen theme does not include templates, so you might want to double check the theme you were using locally. Look for a page-templates folder; if there is one and you were using the Twenty Seventeen theme, did you add that to the theme?

If the database wasn’t migrated from local to the remote site, this would explain why the Template drop-down is not showing on the remote version.
If you just want to initialize the Template drop-down in the page editor the following should help.

The Template dropdown menu magically appears in the page editor when you create a custom page template.
To create a custom page template:

      1. Copy page.php into your child theme directory from your parent theme directory, then change the filename to page-xxxxxx.php (xxxxxx being your custom name).
      2. Add a new comment line above the others at the top of the file saying: Template name: Your template name here

Go back to your page editor and you’ll see your Template drop-down menu has magically appeared and you’ll be able to select your newly created template.
