Hi, Since updating widget wrangler to 2.0.1 my custom templates no longer work.

My template files which are in the ‘templates’ directory are identical in configuration to the ‘widget-1x.php’ (other than a few tiny HTML tweaks). These functioned fine under previous versions, but now don’t appear to have any affect at all.

My understanding of the documentation is that I could continue to use this simple format template file (as apposed to the widget.php template).

Should previous template files still work, or are there changes that need to be made? I cannot see any fundamental differences that should affect this?

I resolved the issue by turning off ‘Theme Compatibility’.

Which is a bit unusual as I’m pretty sure it’s on by default for every other version of Wrangler.

    Still all working now.

If you have time, I would like to debug this a little further.

Is the setting “Use Legacy Template Suggestions” enabled? If you upgraded from 1.x, that should have been enabled automatically.

After making sure the above setting is enabled, re-enable Theme Compatibility, and then go edit a widget that has a custom template. In the Advanced Help section of the edit-widget screen, does it list the custom widget template you made in the “Template Suggestions” area?

I’m not sure how disabling Theme Compatibility could have any affect on whether or not a custom template is being found in your theme.

I believe I’ve found the issue related to saving the settings page. I’ve made an update that should take care of this.

To fix this, you should Reset Settings on the Widget Wrangler >> Settings >> Tools page, then re-enable the post_types you desire. You should make sure that Legacy Template Suggestions are enabled, and I recommend Theme Compatibility.

Please let me know if you have a chance to update to the newest version 2.0.2 and review this. Thanks.

Hi Jonathan, thanks for the reply. I upgraded as suggested to 2.0.2 and followed your instructions.

Unfortunately it seems tho the issue is still there. I had to turn off Theme Compatibility for it to properly display my template.

To give an example, here is what my widgets should look like and do display correctly with Theme Compatibility off.

Here these are with the Theme Compatibility on.

Wether it’s specific to the theme (probably) I’m not sure, but it hasn’t been an issue till now.

Let me know what other information will be useful to you.

Interesting. It looks like to me this is a case of not needing/wanting theme compatibility. Have you been using WW since before 1.5?

    (@lamboski)

    Yes, well before 1.5.

Turning theme compatibility on wouldn’t be a major issue except that it seems to be framing the widget with the same CSS as the inner. This this border within a border scenario.

This seams to in turn ignore the heading CSS that’s in the template file.

Great. Ok, then you designed your site before Theme compatibility even existed. I think you’re good to leave it disabled. What it tells me is that my upgrade script to WW 2 is enabling theme compatibility regardless of previous settings. I’ll look into fixing that.

    Thanks for the help!
