• I’m a new WordPress convert from the old Greymatter religion. I have finally gotten WordPress installed, thanks entirely to the help of Podz, and am looking to install my own look or theme or template… I’ve been working on this for a coupple of hours and am getting nowhere. I did manage to finally CHMOD my index file to 666, as far as I can tell, but frankly I just don’t know HOW to go into my WordPress CP and modify the page templates to get this started. The look I want is here: https://www.erisfree.com/d2/txt/mistcol3.php . Again, my trouble may just be a navigation issue – my not knowing WHERE and HOW to manipulate changes to my blog appearance from the WP CP.

  • It works differently than GM. First, I would suggest to read the articles related to Themes and Templates from the Codex. You will also find a huge list a themes there, or you can go here to choose a theme that is close enough to your design… then try tweaking it to your liking.

Also, you could have a look at the Theme guide on Urbangiraffe.com

Thanks! Question: I went to themes.os42.com and browsed through the selections; how do I download one that I like? Next, how do I upload it? I swear I’m searching for this information but I can’t find it.

I prefer Alex King’s theme browser, as you can download directly from the site. The one you linked to, I think you have to follow links to the theme’s creator, and download from them.
As far as where to put it once you’ve got it, ftp it into the wp-content–>themes folder. Then in the admin panel, click on presentation, and choose the new theme. You can then directly edit the different templates in the editor if you’d like

So if I choose a theme I like but want to change the background color, etc, I can do this after installing it in the wp-content/themes folder?

You can do it either before or after. Before: on your computer in a text editor. After: on your computer and re-upload the file; or in the theme editor online.

Edit. To work online you have to make the files writable (chmod through ftp) to be able to save your changes.
