I design and develop websites and I stopped recommending and installing PayPal as a checkout gateway when PayPal started pushing this terrible new plugin on developers back in 2022.

Since then, PayPal has started emailing clients of mine that use WooCommerce telling them that they “now require an upgrade to the latest version of the PayPal Commerce Platform”.

This is a complete lie and nothing but an illicit attempt to get online retailers to install a plugin that they don’t need (and one that has received mainly terrible reviews since launch).

I only recommend Stripe to my ecommerce clients and I have now started warning them to watch out for emails from PayPal claiming they need to upgrade or change any of their ecommerce software.

For a company like PayPal to be so underhand is despicable!

    Hi there,

    Thanks for providing feedback.

When outdated software can no longer be maintained, then it will eventually need to be replaced with something new. PayPal Standard reached a point in which it was no longer feasible to maintain but it will still continue to work for a while longer.
Anyway, would you mind elaborating further about your troubles?

If anything is unclear or doesn’t work as expected, we’d be happy to assist from the support forums: https://www.ads-software.com/support/plugin/woocommerce-paypal-payments/
    Thanks!

    Kind regards,
    Niklas

I appreciate the response, but it’s not acceptable that PayPal/WooCommerce pulled support for a working plugin without releasing a reliable replacement. PayPal Payments is getting slated in reviews, and when I ask my clients if they want to switch to the new plugin they are all firmly saying no.

Over the last few weeks all I’ve done is disable PayPal Standard and instead activate Stripe. All the following were with PayPal and they’ve all changed to Stripe:

I’ve got another 5 sites scheduled to switch to Stripe next week too.

PayPal Payments has to be significantly improved and the 5 star ratings need to rocket up before use of the plugin can be contemplated.
