testing new theme?
-
I am designing a new theme for my site – but don’t want to change the theme while the site is live. I am really not happy with the way the preview theme plugin works.
Can I build the site on another domain I own – but point the wp-config.php information to my current mySQL database? Would that work?
Or, in the alternative, if I create a new database and build the theme on this other domain – can it be easily switched to my live domain when I am ready to make the switch (so I don’t have to redo all the pages, posts, etc)
Thanks!

any thoughts or ideas ?
Anyone got any creative solutions for this ? I don’t want to develop locally because I like to test the site on other browsers which means I am going on more then computer because I refuse to put windows on my mac.
no ideas?
A 5 second search in the extend (plugins) section of this very site turned up a possibility: https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/theme-preview/
I have two WordPress blogs on the same domain, each with their own folder and database. I use one of these blogs for testing and working on my themes, and it is blocked with robots.txt and set to private with WordPress.
Reading my post for 5 seconds would have revealed the following:
I am really not happy with the way the preview theme plugin works.
-iridiax – that is a great idea. Can you have the two different blogs pointing to the same database ? or no? Only because I would want to not have to enter all the pages and posts twice. Get what I am saying?
Thanks.
Reading my post for 5 seconds would have revealed the following:
how nice of you to point out the fact that someone that read 100s of similar threads a day misread something of yours.
You should walk in the shoes of some of the ppl around here.

and fwiw, you have three years on this forum, do you *think* that maybe you might have found this sort of info on your own? 4 bumps for something this fricken trivial, unbelievable.
I do try to walk around here and help out when I can. It’s not often, but I try when I can. And when I do try to help people I am not condescending about it. Granted they may read 100s of similar threads a day, but does that give them the right to be condescending about it? A simple answer, without the tone, would have been fine. (How about, “Try this plugin, it might be helpful….”)

Just because I have been a member for three years doesn’t mean I know everything about WordPress. Sometimes people have the easiest question and the obvious answer doesn’t pop out at them. This is supposed to be the place you go for that case, a place of knowledge & learning. If someone has a simple question that for some reason they just cannot get, they turn here for help. It shouldn’t matter how beginner or advanced they are. Sometimes the slightest advice triggers an “ah-ha” moment in their head.
You, on the other hand, have just wasted both my time and yours with your unnecessary comments. What is “unbelievable” is that I have seen plenty more posts from other people that are just as trivial. Sometimes the answer to a problem is not apparent to people right away.
I love this forum. It is a great, great source of knowledge. Unbelievable and unmatched. Unfortunately there are people who get irritated because they think people’s questions are “trivial”. Who made you the person that decides which questions are trivial and which questions aren’t? All I am asking here is a little respect. If you treat people with respect, you will get respect in return.
Thank you.
Who made you the person that decides which questions are trivial and which questions aren’t?
who made you the person to decide who can and cannot have an opinion? You have heard of an opinion, right?
Arent you, after all, voicing an opinion on the tone of handy’s response?
Oh my, I think you are.
Nuff said.
See, you could have taken the high road. Apologized for the tone. Said you had a bad day or whatever. But you didn’t. You had to get the last word in, the last laugh.
Any reasonable reading of my post above would show that I am not suggesting that I am deciding who can or cannot have an opinion. I was posting my opinion that I did not think it was reasonable for either handy or yourself to take such a negative and arrogant tone.
I never questioned your ability to have an opinion, but for everyone’s sake here, why can’t you share your opinion with a little respect for others? Is it that much to ask? There are different ways to convey your opinion on something. One way is to look down on somebody and tell them that their problem is trivial. The other is to try and be nice about it.
Re-reading my original post to handy, I would like to apologize for my snarky response to his comment. I should have taken the high road and explained to him that I had already tried that plugin and didn’t like the way it functioned. So to you, HandySolo, I apologize.
As to you, whooami, I do not apologize because I don’t think it’s right how you treated my question and how you phrased your responses. I am so sorry that I was trying to take up your valuable time to answer such a silly, trivial question. I was under the impression that if I had a question about WordPress, this is where I come to answer it. So next time that you feel you would like to offer your opinion or advice to me, don’t. I’ll pass. I would rather not know the answer to something then deal with your condescending tone. If you would like to give the respect to me, I shall give it back in return. I don’t think asking a stupid question means I don’t deserve any respect and would probably bet that most people on this forum would agree. I have seen my fair share of stupid questions being asked and if every single one of those people were treated with disrespect this place wouldn’t be running.
I have seen my fair share of stupid questions being asked ..
Look, you wanna feel disrespected, you have at it. Im not apologizing for anything. If I really wanted to disrespect I could have asked you if you were “lazy or just stupid”, right?
Of course, this is the place to come for questions, but dont you think after waiting 7 days that it might be the kind of question that might be answered by doing a little of your own leg work?
I mean cmon, I can go google your question and get pages of relevant results.
There’s typically a reason that threads go like that without being answered.

Lastly dont put words in my mouth — I said I thought your question was trivial, NOT stupid. And I didnt say anything UNTIL after you decided to be mouthy to someone that cleans up the forum for you. Someone doing you more of a favor than you may ever know.
And honeslty, if you really cant see how compared to a post about being hacked, THIS IS trivial, well then I cant help you.
That there are hundreds more of them doesnt make this one any less of one.. in my opinion.
Now, you can respond, have at it, Im not coming back, I said my peace.

FWIW
Can I build the site on another domain I own – but point the wp-config.php information to my current mySQL database? Would that work?
Yes, as long as you change the siterul and blogurl settings in your wp-config.php –> Thats in the codex.
Or, in the alternative, if I create a new database and build the theme on this other domain – can it be easily switched to my live domain when I am ready to make the switch (so I don’t have to redo all the pages, posts, etc)
Of course.
a simple answer was all that was needed right from the beginning. thank you.
Sorry I offended.
WordPress 2.6 will hopefully contain this functionality, due for release between 7th July and 14th July. If you are daring you could download the beta ??
Holy crap flammobammo THANK YOU!
I started reading about WordPress 2.6. I saw that the theme preview functionality is built from a plugin.
https://www.prelovac.com/vladimir/wordpress-plugins/theme-test-drive
For anyone who is looking to do what I requested at the beginning of the thread this plugin is PERFECT. When you are logged in as admin you get to see the theme you select, while everyone else sees your current theme. This is GREAT, much better then the other theme preview plugin!
Thanks again.
