    Hi,

I already gave this a 5* rating as it is an excellent plugin – over 300 spammers booted since last night!

I was wondering though – is it possible to test what spammers see and to work out their possible ways through via the ‘Diagnostic’ section?

  • The only way to test in the way you suggest is to log off, clear the cache, and try to create spam.

The easiest way to fake a spam is to use a “spam word” in your comment or registration, such as “viagra”.

If your admin IP is whitelisted, won’t this make testing useless?

Or, if your admin IP is not whitelisted, won’t testing get you locked out of your own site?

You can always use the email ‘[email protected]’ to test the plugin. This bypasses the allow checks and will force the plugin to act as though a spammer has hat the site. I put this in to check my work as I developed the plugin.

Keith – Thanks for the tip with tester email. I’ve been using a few brower proxy services for testing and those also work for seeing what a spammer will see.

I just started using your plugin last week on a forum site I’ve been running for over 20 years (past 4 years using strictly WordPress and plugins). Love what your plugin does, and it works great. I use it in combination with “Limit Login Attempts” “Bulletproof Security” and “Theme My Login” All work to provide me with a pretty good feeling about security and spam. I was disappointed to read on your blogseye website that you intend to discontinue support for SSSP ?? I hope that someone with the appropriate skills will be able to help your project live on.

I just ordered a copy of “Error Message Eyes” (paperback). Looking forward to reading that, and hoping, that with encouragement, you might continue to support this plugin. Glad to see that you are still posting support responses here ??

Thank you so much for the kind words.

I officially retired when my last six month contract was not renewed. One of things that I did was work on the plugin. There is a stable version at https://www.blogseye.com, and I am considering posting this to the WordPress repository.

I’ll look forward to the repository launch – this really is an excellent plugin that no doubt winds up lots of spammers!

Keith – I’ve been using the latest WP repository version of this plugin for 12 days now. It has stopped about 5,000 spam login/registration attempts. It has also noticeably lightened the load on the “Limit Login Attempts” plugin that I also use – from several dozen lockouts a day to just a few. This plugin is awesome ??

I expect to be upgrading my servers to PHP 7 soon and will upgrade to your latest beta version prior to that (read somewhere that the beta has fixes for some PHP 7 errors).

Knowing that you are “retired again”, I wonder what the future will hold for your plugin. I see you have a SSSP page at GitHub, but the last update there was in 2015. Have you had anyone come forward offering to help you keep this plugin up to date, or willing to take the lead on it? Personally, I do not have the plugin development knowledge to offer any help. But, I would like to encourage anyone who does to consider contacting you about helping this great plugin to live on.

    What do you think?

I am, as we speak, rewriting the plugin.
    some of the changes:
    1) I am no longer providing the addons for free. There will be a registration process with a small fee to get the addons.
    2) I am removing the threat scan option and moving it into an addon.
    3) I am removing the option maintenance function and moving it to addon.
    4) Adding an option to notify the admin of admin logins.
    5) Removing the beta update function. All updates will be through WordPress, even the addons.
    6) I will redo the bad neighborhood code to stop spammers from sources that have appeared since the last time I scanned the database.
    7) I have a bunch of things on the todo list that I might get to.

I don’t think that charging will impact many people. In any case I think that any reasonably competent hacker will fix the PHP so that they get the addons without paying, although I hope that they won’t.

I will have to handle the 30 or so people who have already donated, so that they get the code to activate the addons.

    Keith

That all seems like great news. I know dozens of people who work more now that they are retired. ??
