Text area restricted and unable to resize images.

Ok, before i start i am going to state this very clearly.
I need the solution explained in lay-mans terms.

I am using the twenty fourteen template.
When i create a page the text will only move about 1/3rd of the way across the page and then automatically drop to the next line.
Images are also can not be re-sized in any way at all.
No matter what i do or try the text will not carry on across the page and the image will return to a default scale.
(To add i was also looking for a plugin that would let me change the text area to a image or make the underlay of the content text area a image instead of a white canvas.
The reason i was looking for this was that i made a image of the websites front page and i was just going to place it into the area like some online poster rather than keep rattling my brain for a solution to the original problem.
The problem is every plugin or tutorial is for changing the background image and not the text underlay itself. However i do know that such a plugin exists, i used it about 5 years ago on a site. Now i can’t seem to find it anymore.)

So if anybody can tell me how to fix the text area and image scaling in step by step i would be very grateful. If not then could someone at least point me to a plugin that will let me just replace the text area with a image and i will do the site on photoshop and place it in like some online poster
