Textarea settings.

In my contact form, the message area width overflows across the width of the box.
All other fields are ok.
I have found the ‘colums & rows’ fields and have changed the colums field to match the correct width i require, but this is in HTML and I cannot save it.
I have also tried in CSS without success.
How can I adjust this width in CSS or by any other means?
