  • Dear @cacabe

We experience the same issue. This is what we see:

    OnPaste.20220517-095355

We don’t mind seeing this type of advert a couple of times but on our website it has now been appearing every day over the past weeks. Sorry, I don’t know exactly for how long it has been showing but it feels like about 2 weeks.

Would anybody know whether this type of intrusive advert is compliant with WordPress policy/guidelines?

    yes, everyday and annoying…

    Hello @cacabe and @beachholiday,

Thanks for choosing the Menu Icons plugin!

We are not able to replicate this issue on our instances, that notification appears very rarely and it does not reappear after it is closed. However, our developers are working on a fix for this and hopefully it will be solved in the next update of the plugin.

    Have a nice day!

    Dear @luciamarinescu

Many thanks for looking into this.

It really is very annoying having to click this advert away on a daily basis.

    Have a lovely day, too.

    VERY ANNOYING!!

Can’t get rid of this marketing nag message.

yes, they are pretending to try to fix it when they know exactly how to do and have no intention to fix it…

    Hi @twd, @cacabe and @beachholiday!

This should be fixed in the latest version of the plugin (0.12.12).

    Have a nice day!

    Dear @luciamarinescu

Many thanks for updating the plugin.

    Have a nice day, too.

    Dear @luciamarinescu

Sadly, I have to report today that the reminder is back up:

    OnPaste.20220603-123922

Would you mind having another look to see how you could prevent it from re-appearing?

Many thanks for your help with this.

    it never stopped appearing !

yes, they are pretending to try to fix it when they know exactly how to do and have no intention to fix it…

I’m also running the latest version of this plugin and the notification is always shown. I tried dismissing via the close button at the top right, but it keeps re-showing upon refresh. I tried going to Preview Neve to actually do what it suggests, but it keeps re-showing upon refresh. I tried actually installing the Neve theme (obviously not activating since I have a different theme being used on my site), but it keeps re-showing.

It appears nothing shy of actually using that theme will have this message go away (I’m assuming that would get it to go away, but I don’t want to use that theme so I haven’t confirmed.)

I have tested multiple sites and this same problematic behavior is consistent across all of them (also coinciding with everyone else here & in other support forum topics [see https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/any-way-to-hide-theme-preview-message-forever/ ] having this happening as well.)

I see https://github.com/Codeinwp/wp-menu-icons/issues/206 mentions they removed the AJAX-based dismissal so it processes it entirely without relying on JS, but it appears there’s something else coming into play here.

I’m wondering if it’s the nonce verification or implementation of the transient for checking if it’s been dismissed already or not that’s a bit unreliable given certain setups (this then not behaving regardless of it using the old AJAX method or the new method.)

It really does appear to be related to relying on a transient when the “maximum lifetime” of the transient is 365 days for this dismissal while W3 Total Cache (and potentially other things) are likely to clear out that transient more frequently than that (ex. purging of object cache has transients be purged as well by default with W3TC [with other things able to purge transients as well.])

I’ve detailed how a setting value of the timestamp of when the notice was dismissed (instead of the current transient setup) would be more reliable here: https://github.com/Codeinwp/wp-menu-icons/issues/206#issuecomment-1154422064

This would prevent the notice from constantly bugging people where their transients aren’t intended to be storing things long-term (365 days for a transient really isn’t all that “temporary” like transients are intended for & it being temporary means the notice might show way more frequent per transients being cleared out for any number of reasons.) This also allows the timestamp in the setting from when the message was dismissed could be checked to have it re-show after 365 days or be cleared out if/when a new message should be shown (making it similar to the current behavior while then being much more reliable/resilient.)

    Hello @beachholiday and @cacabe!

@kzeni is right, it seems like the reappearance of that notice is related to transients. We are trying to find a permanent solution for this and hopefully it will be fixed soon.

    Thanks for your patience!

Is there an estimate of when the new release will be out? It looks like this issue was updated a week or so back and we’re just waiting for it to be packaged up and released as a new version (which I understand likely includes other things being updated with it all then needing to be tested before release.)
