    Hi there,

I’m new to this and not very familiar with the terminology. I’ve done a backup using this software to dropbox and have 2 zip files one for plug ins and one for themes. Do I need to clone the site in order to have a back up of the data i.e images and text and the way my site looks/layout backed up..?

    Many thanks

    Hi Helen,

A full backup should include not only those 2 zips, but another one for uploads, and another .gz file for the database. (And sometimes another zip, “others”, as well).

Having all of those constitutes a full backup.

My guess would be, though, that you’ve really got all those in your Dropbox, and the missing ones just hadn’t synced to the Dropbox app on your PC yet – ?

The ‘report’ feature in UpdraftPlus is also useful, to send you an email at the end of a backup, to tell you if the backup completed successfully or not.

You can test the backups by creating a clone of the site using them (though site cloning isn’t in the free version of UpdraftPlus – restoring on the same site is, but not cloning to a new copy of the site); or, at least, open the zip files on your PC to make sure they are not corrupt. (For the .gz database file, you’ll need a copy of 7zip – https://www.7-zip.org).

    Best wishes,
    David
