The best media solution for networking

  • I have tested a lot of media solutions for buddypress and I think that Mediapress is the best one.

    What I like:
    -it’s simple to use and works well in my installation.
    -it can handle many types of media (photo, video, audio, document) with many extensions for each type. You can even share documents.
    -it is extensible
    -it has buddypress integration (profile and groups)
    -it has space management and this feature can be customized with a plugin
    -it has privacy levels
    -it supports commenting and you can also add liking
    -it is lightweight (tested with P3 Profiler)
    -it is translation ready now
    -the support is quick and excellent.

    What I don’t like:
    I don’t like google reader for documents. I have privacy concerns about Google generally. With the doc component, you can share ebooks but I don’t recomment it for sharing personal or business documents (for example with friends or collaborators).

    What I suggest:
    -adding linking for external ressources (youtube, vimeo etc)
    -add type Projects (I will post a feature request soon)

    Thank you for the thoughtful and detailed review. I appreciate it.

    I agree with your suggestions for enhancements.
    1. Doc Viewer:- I am looking for a nice document viewer javascript addon that can render most of the file types. I have seen some rendering pdf well but they fail with other types. Using google doc viewer allows us to render large number of file types. It is still pluggable and can be disable to use other Viewer when we are going to have one. If you know any script allowing rendering of pdf,doc,excel and zip files, please do let me know. I will add that.

    2. Remote url support is coming in future. That is part of our future milestone.

    3. Project:- That fits much better as an addon plugin instead of the core. Have replied to your other post. Lets get that working asap.
