• I’ve used WordPress to create the web presence for the Digital Gazetteer of the Song Dynasty, a digital humanities project created at UC Merced using MySQL and ArcGIS to represent and analyze change in Medieval Chinese political geography (What a mouthful!).

It’s the Pressplay theme with NexGen to provide various galleries of created maps. It was important to create a web presence for scholars to download the database, shapefiles and documentation, as well as see some examples of work done with the data. Even though it isn’t a blog (There may be very occasional updates about the project) I found WordPress provided the most attractive and convenient solution.

  • Nice site. Do you have an archive page? I can′t find it.

No, there’s no archives page. There’s only one post and its just the same information as found on the Overview page. There may be later posts, if the scholar who runs the project wishes to update folks about the database, but she may just let it sit there like a regular web page. One of the benefits of the wordpress package is that it affords a less techie-type the ability to maintain a simple page like this, thereby limiting the recurring cost to the school or the department.

You could add a widget to show the recent and popular posts. What do you think? It would improve the blog.
