I noticed a strange bug recently. The last added item does not want to update the download counter. I have been using the plugin for several years without any problems. The only thing I see that could be a problem is the high ID number.

The published download link that is problematic is at https://www.envox.eu/eez-studio-docs/ under the PDF MANUALS tab.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

    Hi,

The only thing I see that could be a problem is the high ID number.

    Is the ID number correct?

    Regards.

Yes, the ID number is correct otherwise the download would not work at all.

Let me see if I understand this correctly. You are saying that you have created 21,246,367 downloads using our plugin. Is this correct? Sorry for the question, I want to make sure I understand your issue correctly.

    Kind regards.

No, I have about two dozens of download files. Please note that I didn’t assign that huge number to ID: it seems that is assigned automatically when new item is created and I have no means how to change it (it’s read only) or I missed something.

What happens if you create a new download product for testing purposes? Does it add a huge ID number?

    Regards.

    (@envox)

That’s right, it continues to add huge ID number, for example I’ve added yesterday new item EEZ Studio leaflet that has the same issue with updating download counter:

That is very strange. This is the first time I read about an issue like this. Has anything changed in your site and or your server that might have affected the ID number incrementing by so much?

    Regards.

    (@envox)

I don’t know why the number is so high and what activities increment it. The site is working without visible issues.

I’ve been looking at what others are saying about the large post ID number. They say that it can be as big as 2^64, which means that about 21 million of mine are still tiny number. Still, I don’t know what would really create such large numbers because I don’t have 21 million items in the database. It is possible that some broken plugin caused this problem.

That is possible. Something in your site has caused this issue which is very strange. This could also be affecting your download count. Please try the following troubleshooting steps.

The thing is that your plugin works correctly together with all the plugins I currently have active. It does not only work with items that have a large ID number. Why would deactivating other plugins help? They will not cause the ID number of the download item to decrease.

They will not cause the ID number of the download item to decrease.

This issue is very challenging to reproduce. The reason is because in all my tests so far it works well and the ID number does not increase dramatically like in your example above. In all my test the ID number increases by 1. That is why I thought carrying out a plugin/theme conflict test might reveal the issue. Or maybe something in your server has changed. There is definitely something strange happening in your site.

What if you delete the last downloads created with the huge ID numbers and then disable and delete the plugin. Install and activate a fresh new copy and then carry out a test. Check to see if the ID number increase by 1. Also make sure you enable Debug mode first. Then check the logs once you have carried out the test.

Make sure you create a backup first before you deactivate and delete the plugin, just in case something goes wrong.

    Kind regards.

Unfortunately, deactivation, deletion and reinstallation did not help. The download still works fine, but the counter doesn’t want to update.
I tried deactivating the plugins as well as changing the theme to the default one. Nothing helped.
For testing, I installed another download manager: for example, Lana Download Manager has no problem with updating the counter.

Thank you for sharing more information. I have submitted a message to the developers to investigate further your issue.

Hi, The ID numbers is simply a ID number (a counter) of a Post that WordPress generates when a new custom post is created. It’s not controlled by our plugin. When our plugin creates a new download item (which is a custom post type), WordPress gives it the ID number based on what number you site’s post ID is upto. It’s not controlled by our plugin (it comes from your WordPress install).

Somehow that number has gotten messed up by another plugin or theme or customization that yo have applied to the site (when that number became so bit). Hopefully that gives you an understanding of where that ID number comes from so you can try to backtrack what caused that ID number to spike on your site in the first place. You might be able to reset that Post ID number counter back to a normal number. We won’t be able to do that from our plugin.
