• Development Version (5.3.3-alpha-47419)
    Gutenberg Version 7.7.1

I was told I should post here instead of in the Alpha testing area as it relates to Gutenberg.

Is there a way to get the block edit icons not to cover content? They are opaque white now in the Development version of WordPress but perfectly hide the last line of text in the above block. It would be nicer if they were slightly transparent if they have to hide content, or even better can the blocks shift down a bit so the icons are visible but they don’t hide any content at all? Any help here would be great as I have to make a large website with about 300 pages of content and I’ll be doing lots of text editing. If it was just sentences it would be okay but it’s numbers that I have to check lots and I can’t type them in unless I can see them. At the moment the only way I can do the work is by having two windows open. I have the other window open and also set to edit mode so I can see the numbers and edit bits quickly.

    Hi

If I understood you correctly. The toolbar seen just over the content is blocking the view. You can instead use the top toolbar:
Click the 3 vertical dots in the top right corner and then select Top Toolbar. This will then move the toolbar to the top of the page, so that the content will not be blocked.

    I hope that helps!

@paaljoachim I was using that for a while but it’s a lot of extra work when you have to move heaps of blocks or make a new website. It looks very nice though. I just wish there were extra keyboard shortcuts there when we used the top toolbar. And a new icon for “add block below” with a shortcut, as the current “add block” option adds a block above other blocks.

For the icon problem, it would be heaps better if the space between the block being edited and the one above it slightly increased through CSS and the icons fit in without hiding any content. You just need 14px which can be shaved off the space around the block being edited. I can’t see any situation where you would want icons covering content. The editing window doesn’t show a perfect preview with realistic sizes at the moment so it’s not causing any problems there either.

If for some reason the icons do have to cover content, please just make them slightly transparent so we can see what is written under them.

    Hey

Have you tried the newest version of the Gutenberg plugin?
See if that makes it any better.

Are you talking about version 7.7.1? The icons are too high up and hide content. The plugin also hides the standard view page button in the edit-post-header div so we have to use the tiny permalink in the right menu. I hope this can be fixed soon.

The Gutenberg plugin makes the add block plus mark black but it doesn’t work when we move the mouse over other parts of the div. This plugin is introducing a few new problems. Can’t the whole area that has a mouseover be clickable to add new blocks? The mouseover area to add new blocks is only about 30 pixels now. Far smaller than Google standards on buttons.

    Hi

I think it would be helpful if you add a feature request:
    https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/new?template=Feature_request.md

    Give feedback and add screenshots.
    Thanks!

Don’t worry about the extra suggestions anymore.

I have gone through 3 support threads to find out this plugin was causing the problems and reported the bugs now in triplicate. The plugin should be fixed or be removed from the plugin directory. I’ll just report it as not working and post a link to this thread. There are already pictures on my server with links and details here.

There are 1975 bug reports in Github for this plugin ??

    Thread Starter a4jp

    (@a4jpcom)

Also 446 pull requests. Who is checking all those? How many people are working on this plugin?

Yeah there are a lot of open Github issues and PR’s the project is a mix of Automattic and volunteers who help out. I am one of the volunteers.

So yes I have a created a bunch of issues myself that are getting pretty old. But I stick with the project anyway as I really like Gutenberg.

When opening a feature request, bug etc on Github you need to go step by step with detailed instructions or feedback that also include screenshots to let us know what is going on. It helps the whole project.

O and yes there are things that do not work correctly and that is why details are needed.

I have gone through 3 support threads to find out this plugin was causing the problems and reported the bugs now in triplicate.

Can you also link to the other support threads? So that I can look at those as well.

    Thanks!

Add the links and screenshots into the Github issue. So people can quickly see what is going on. Then add the link to this support thread and the other support thread.

I noticed that Earnjam suggested you make a PR. That is a good way to move it forward.

Do you know which file I would have to edit to add the css to the icons? If I know roughly where it is it would save a lot of time.
