I have repeatedly been getting this issue with PublishPress Blocks, whereby when I try to edit a page I get the message “The editor has encountered an unexpected error.”

Clicking “Attempt Recovery” does nothing but hide the error alert. I can click “Copy Error” which copies this:

TypeError: Cannot destructure property 'categories' of 'Object(...)(...)' as it is undefined.

This specifically happens after I have viewed a paged, clicked Edit Page, and the editor loads – the error occurs when I click onto any block to begin editing.

This prevents me from making any edits to pages, posts etc. Up to now, I have been able to simply disable the blocks plugin and edit the text I need to. I am unable to add any new blocks provided by the plugin, though.

I have gone through all plugins and made sure there are no plugin conflicts.

@crslawltd this one seems tricky. As a new test, if you deactivate PublishPress Blocks, the error is gone?

    (@crslawltd)

@htmgarcia yes, that’s right – the error only occurs when the plugin is activated, and I do not get the error when I deactivate the plugin.

    @crslawltd thanks for the clarification!

    a. Please check if you are using Gutenberg plugin, if that’s the case, deactivate.
    b. Go to Blocks > Settings and save
    c. Go to Blocks > Block Access and save your user role

@htmgarcia We do not use the Gutenberg plugin, but I proceeded with b and c, I’m still getting the same error.

Thanks for the clarification! Any other information that may help us to reproduce the issue in our end? The more details, the better.

@htmgarcia sorry for taking a while to reply.

I don’t think there’s much more I can give you? I’m running WordPress 5.8.1 with the Page Builder Framework theme. I could list currently active plugins, but as explained this issue only ever appears with PublishPress Blocks active, and I could find no conflict with any other active plugins.

Are you using a particular PublishPress Blocks block in those pages?

    Thread Starter crslawltd

    (@crslawltd)

It happens on every page I try to edit – regardless of whether or not I am using any blocks from PublishPress Blocks or not.

Sorry for making more questions. This one is tricky to even reproduce.

May you try turning off features from Blocks > Settings such as Enable block access, Enable PublishPress Blocks and Enable custom styles. This may tell us if a particular feature is involved.

    (@crslawltd)

No matter which settings are on/off under Blocks > Settings, the same error is still occurring.

Any difference when disabling all of them at once?

This issue could be exclusive to your site.

I tried having them all disabled, different combinations being left enabled/disabled – always seemed to get the exact same issue.

Tested the same scenario in my end, and the editor still works fine. Under PHP 5.6, 7.3. 7.4 and 8.

Sorry, I’m not sure what else I can give you.

The only solution I have at the moment is to disable the plugin, copy an existing error block from another page, edit that block, then reenable the plugin.

My apologies. It seems an issue exclusive to your site.
If you find any new detail, please let us know.
