The Google thing – not discussed here?! [CLOSED]

  • Since ‘we’ are not allowed to post anything about the Google/Link thingy – please point me to an URL, forum or whatever where I can participate in this.

    This is a VERY bad way to handle this. VERY bad.

    Reminds too much of old politb??ro tactics. I also find the whole ‘Matt is out of the country’ story a lame excuse. I guess we here in Europe have no internet, no internet cafes and don’t allow strangers to use our PCs?

    No press release. No statement on the dev blog. No word on the homepage. Threads like this one get deleted/closed (talking to you podz).

    If you want to form a community and make it grow – then let is also share the tough stuff. If there is a problem – you get flamed one way or the other. BUT DO STAND UP TO IT.

    As bloggers we all know that you can’t contain such a thing – it spreads like fire (and you even developed the software for it). So let’s be real bloggers, bitch, rant, flame and blame it out.

    Earn your respects by being open about it – not by stonewalling.

    1. Google has not banned WordPress.

    2. Matt is in Europe. You will not get anything resembling an official response until he returns.

    Anyway, this topic is hardly dangerous (if still non-support related), and rather it’s how some people comment on it that will tend to need moderating.

    Ryan, I’m not sure you can chalk our questions up to ignorance.

    A couple of facts are indisputable. Firstly, there are better than 150k pages on this server produced by Hot Nacho. Secondly, on the front page of www.ads-software.com is a bit of CSS that hides several links in direct conflict with Google’s policy.

    Those are facts. What is missing is comment from the lead developer and owner of the site. I’m certainly not qualified to comment on Mr. Mullenwegs motives but I am quite capable of stating that this is something that reflects on more than just one person.

    When someone else games the system (blog flood-posting by robots) it’s spam…. When you game the system, it’s not – Thanks for clearing that up. Again….are you out of your mind?

    Politics? …what? This is about money!!! And how 100,000 users were bent over a digital barrel without their consent.

    It’s wrong….got it? All those 100,000 downloads of WP meant one thing: deception.

    It’s done and it’s out and any effort to whitewash it is too late.

    I’ve clipped all backlinks to the WP site and recommend the same for anyone else that dissaproves of this type of abuse.

    Well the intarweb chowderheads are jumping all over this as they do with every “Open Source Hero Turned Capitalist Scum Scandal of the Week”. Hey, if it bleeds it leads, right?

    When the dust settles and Matt responds, this will be ancient history. Till then, uh, I guess we can chuckle at all the anonymous rantings of self-righteously indignant morons?

    Speculating out of ignorance is a term an old humanities professor of mine liked to use. Speculation requires a certain amount of ignorance, that’s why it’s speculation. Regardless, let’s say “idly gossiping before all the facts are in” instead.

    I know nothing about the matter beyond what I have read in the various flaming threads. I’m not qualified to comments on Matt’s motives either, which is why I’m refusing to speculate about what they may be.

    Last from me for now:

    Putting aside how I feel about this, in reality it didn’t do anything to me. Digitally or otherwise.

    @arlo: I don’t think the web or the blogosphere ever forgets anything? And bad press has the nasty habit to stick forever as a halftruth: “Ever tried WordPress?” – “Isn’t that this google spamming software.”

    Is the irony lost that nobody is reading that? You know, I come here every day and spend a good amount of hours supporting people, people who are thankful for that support. And, I’m still amazed that ignorant pieces of work still infect this world. Leave this topic alone, nothing will be accomplished by its existence.

    Never mind, I guess I don’t do anything here but spam threads. I honestly don’t know why I waste my time (at least 3-6 hours/day depending on the day) here. It will never change the fact that certain people still exist.

    Are you sure you understand the mechanics involved?

    Your WP site/content was used to promote other sites.

    Your time effort and money was harvested and used by people unconnected to you, without your knowledge or permission.

    The bandwidth you pay for was used for other people’s gain. They got it for free, from you….they reached into your pocket while you weren’t looking. How does that feel?
