• Since ‘we’ are not allowed to post anything about the Google/Link thingy – please point me to an URL, forum or whatever where I can participate in this.

This is a VERY bad way to handle this. VERY bad.

Reminds too much of old politb??ro tactics. I also find the whole ‘Matt is out of the country’ story a lame excuse. I guess we here in Europe have no internet, no internet cafes and don’t allow strangers to use our PCs?

No press release. No statement on the dev blog. No word on the homepage. Threads like this one get deleted/closed (talking to you podz).

If you want to form a community and make it grow – then let is also share the tough stuff. If there is a problem – you get flamed one way or the other. BUT DO STAND UP TO IT.

As bloggers we all know that you can’t contain such a thing – it spreads like fire (and you even developed the software for it). So let’s be real bloggers, bitch, rant, flame and blame it out.

Earn your respects by being open about it – not by stonewalling.

    Thanks.

Podz: “No you are most certainly not.”

I understand that this is a support forum and you don’t want it to deteriorate into a bunch of mudslinging chat — but, with all due respect, please do not tell me what I am and am not capable of saying.

I have linked every site of mine that uses WordPress, every site of a client that uses WordPress and every site of everyone I have encouraged to use WordPress to a link farm. I did not know this at the time. I did not know that the act of giving credit where it was due (and it most definately is due, WP remains a wonderful tool) would result in perpetuating the gaming of Google.

I’m not even sure that I would have changed anything even if I had known — but that is something I never had a chance to decide. I think that all anyone is asking is for some sort of official word. If Mr. Mullenweg can take the time to tell us about the weather in Florence I don’t think that a paragraph or two on something of this importance is an unreasonable request.

kmtcn: You are wrong, read this.

I think www.ads-software.com/articles/ should be banned from Google, however I do feel that WordPress should be able to get some $$$ for their great FREE product.

First off, Google is the best search engine in my opinion. And to do this kind of advertising should prompt a a ban from Google. Now this isn’t to say that Google should block their link to www.ads-software.com as it is a great site with great infomation and a great product. However if Google ever finds any site doing this kind of advertising, they should either block that site from ever showing up in Google search results, or in WordPress’s case, block all search results from that directory of the site.

Some people may say that this is censorship, however when I’m looking for a good search engine, I’m not looking for advertising but rather good information. And if a site is going to try to ‘cheat’ the system, then they should be banned from the search results.

Bad time to take a vacation.

As a once-happy WordPress user, I’m actively and seriously looking for alternatives. Unless something big happens soon, I’m gone.

    It’s been fun.

This is a support forum, we are trying to help individuals with real problems, please leave the politics out of it.

orangeguru is an idividual, he has a real problem, his problem is that WordPress was making money from ‘secret’ advertising. Also I don’t see a WordPress Politics forum, Miscellaneous is really the best he could have done. This topic is in the right form.

I’ve read it 3 times, and it gets more sad each time ??

Did I miss something or are you coming down on both sides if this issue?

I don’t see a WordPress Politics forum, Miscellaneous is really the best he could have done. This topic is in the right form.

Yes, I know that, and I’m basically pleading for this thread to stop. Because no political problem can be solved without an official rebuttal. And, the man who can give that rebuttal is in Europe. He will not respond until he returns. Until then, this thread will accomplish nothing.

kmtcn – and your WP blog is where precisely …. I can’t seem to find your url. Would you enlighten us ?

    kmtcn:
No, I believe that WordPress should be free to make money through advertising, even in this form. However I also believe that Google should be free to do what it wants to improve it searches for its users i.e. banning search results from this kind of advertising.

Oh man, this is absolutely one of those things where the response (or lack thereof) is actually making things worse than the initial problem. Kind of reminds me of what happened when SixApart changed their licensing a while back.

There are way too many hot button aspects to this story. Matt et al need to make an official statement asap. Until they do rumours will continue to spiral out of control.

FWIW, I give Matt the benefit of the doubt on this one. Based on his previous post from a few weeks back I think he’s basically been taken advantage of by a content provider who offered him a deal that was too good to be true (here, host this content for me and I’ll pay you a flat fee). Matt was clearly left holding the bag.
At this point the only thing I think Matt is guilty of is a serious lapse in judgement.

I’m happy to see the WordPress foundation (and it’s employees and volunteers) profit from their work. However, as the Waxy article indicated, there needs to be a little more transparancy.

Here’s hoping that Matt finds a hotspot in Italy and makes an effort to put some of this to rest.

Y’know, for those of you who’ve gone off the deep end here and clipped links to WP, all you really have to do is reframe the links to point to the Support forum main page. It seems to be dreck free, and that would still enable giving credit to a marvelous product while “lily-whitening” your own acts…. I do think it’s a bit previous to be looking for another piece of blogware though…. not that my opinion means a thing of course!

haha, this is gonna be a bitch to come back to, poor Matt.
    lol

The bandwidth you pay for was used for other people’s gain.

FYI…Nobody is using my bandwidth or yours for that matter.

Anyone else notice that all the flamers are people that don’t help out in the forums, fix bugs, release code, or do other things around WP? Most of the people doing the flaming have never give any of their time back to WP…

Let’s get back to work folks and patiently wait until Matt gets back for the answers. WordPress is still one fine piece of software!

@macmanx: Until then, this thread will accomplish nothing. – IMHO it does – it helps the community to voice their opinion. This will help to cope with this unhappy affair. Listening to people is not such a bad thing – or is it? There are many companies out there, who don’t listen to their users feelings, complaints and wishes. Such a projects like WP should be better then that?

“Are you sure you understand the mechanics involved?”

Far more than you apparently think I do.

My site was used for nothing that I wasn’t aware of. What time and money I choose to give has gone and continues to go to the WordPress community. This happens with my knowledge and my permission, and none of it was stolen from me.

I had a link. At first it was there by default but if I didn’t want it I could have removed it. I wanted it there, so it stayed. The link helped in an ever so slight way to improve this site’s PageRank. But I do this for every site I link to. It’s unavoidable, and if I didn’t like it, I would never link. This is all that could be said to have occured between me and the issue at hand. Anything else is hyperbole. Or personal opinion.

Now, do you understand the mechanics?
