    Hi, camboki.

Sorry to see your icons are looking sad. I’d be happy to help you to fix them!

The icons are displaying incorrectly because the plugin’s stylesheet at https://www.lizbokisch.com/wp-content/plugins/simple-social-icons/css/style.css?ver=1.0.5 is returning a 403 permission denied error.

This is typically due to broken file permissions in the simple-social-icons plugin directory. You should be able to fix this with an FTP editor by changing all files in the simple-social-icon directory and subdirectories to use 664 as the file permissions: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Changing_File_Permissions#Using_an_FTP_Client

As soon as that style.css file loads instead of returning the 403 error and you’ve corrected all other file permissions in the plugin folder, your icons should display correctly.

You should find that this also fixes the issue with them appearing vertically, but feel free to let me know if it doesn’t solve things for you!

all files in the simple-social-icons plugin directory and in the css and font subdirectories are set to 664.

    no change.

Thanks for trying that. If setting them to 777 doesn’t make any difference, it would be worth asking your web host why the 403 errors are appearing for that file. There may be an ownership issue that they can help you to resolve.

https://www.lizbokisch.com/wp-content/plugins/simple-social-icons/readme.txt is also generating a 403 for me. Working with your host to resolve these permission issues should fix things for you. Sorry not to be able to offer a quicker solution for you!

    setting everything to 777 worked

icons are displaying properly. i’m confused as to why 664 didn’t work. shall i leave it at 777? any security risk with that?

    Great to hear!

The exact permissions you need depend on how your host configured the server. It’s best not to use 777 permissions if you can avoid it: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Changing_File_Permissions#The_dangers_of_777

It would be worth approaching your web host to ask if there’s anything they can do to allow you to use regular 644 permissions for files and 755 for folders. (If they can’t make that happen, then 664 and 775 are the next safest bet.)
