The mystery of the lost widget areas

    I have a WP website and I am setting up a duplicate site to do some testing of alternative designs. I copied the files across to the new server, and amended the database to reflect the new URL – see this discussion.

    The duplicate site is now functioning well, with just one strange omission – several widget areas on the home page are not showing.

    I have added many new widget areas to the site, by adding code to the functions.php file, and then either using hooks, or adding code to another file. Most of these new widget areas show in the duplicate site, but only the theme’s widget areas show on the front page.

    The widget areas I added on the front page, and which are not showing, required code in the functions.php file plus in the front-page.php file. As far as I can tell, the originals and duplicates of these files are identical, the widgets are set up the same in the dashboard, yet the widget areas show in the original but not in the duplicate.

    I just don’t know where to start in debugging this. Something is preventing the widget areas from showing, but I can’t think of what it could be.

    Does anyone have any thoughts on what to look for please?

    I never resolved this, but I found a better solution. I set up a server on my own computer using the free Desktop Server, then took my Backup WordPress full archive and put it in the Desktop Server Blueprints folder, and I had a full working copy of my WordPress site on my own desktop. It was really easy!
