    I need help please.

I tried inserting wordpress form code into a custom wordpress default page and as soon as I hit update, I got the message below in the browser.

    The (domain) page isn’t working
(domain) is currently unable to handle this request.
    HTTP ERROR 500

I use AWS for hosting, hence no file manager, I’ve never used FTP for updating, but I tried it today and I kept getting

    Status: Resolving address of (domain)
    Status: Connecting to 52.39.1xx.xxx:xx…
Error: Connection timed out after 20 seconds of inactivity
Error: Could not connect to server

I would ideally simply like to replace the theme to maybe twenty sixteen, gain access back to the account and undo my mistake.

Can anyone help on how to go about that, any idea or suggestions will be appreciated.

Did you do that to a page via the normal content editor or did you edit a template (php file)?

Assuming the latter, and that it was a theme file, just rename the theme folder from wp-content/theme/yourtheme to wp-content/theme/yourtheme.off to disable it; WP will switch to twentysixteen.

Steve, Yes, changes were made to the php file. How can I rename the theme? I can’t login to the account, neither could I access it via ftp.

This is why using appearance->editor is a bad idea. One slip of the finger and you bring down your site. (Sorry if that seems harsh, but this is the source of much woe.)

If you don’t have access to a hosting control panel or FTP, please contact your host’s tech support and ask them to delete the theme you were editing.
