    Hello,

I’m experiencing a MAJOR issue with all of my websites right now.

None of the homepages are loading, although I can still (somehow!?) log into the admin areas.

I’m also seeing a notification that says, “The plugin wordfence/wordfence.php has been deactivated due to an error: Plugin file does not exist.”

I haven’t made any changes on my end, and this is affecting all my sites, even though they’re on different servers.

Is there an issue with the Wordfence plugin?

Hi @giansifakis, thanks for reaching out!

I’ve not seen many recent cases of the message you mention which means that WordPress was still treating the plugin as active until you visited the page.

Is the wordfence directory in wp-content/plugins/ missing entirely? If not, is the wordfence.php file still present? Are you able to reactivate the plugin from WordPress > Plugins > Installed Plugins?

    Thanks,
    Peter.

Hi, thanks for your quick response.

I’ve done some testing and set up a new test site on my main server, and Wordfence was working fine there.

The wordfence.php file was present and I was able to reactivate the plugin in all of my websites without any issues. I suspect a malicious file or corrupted plugin might have caused the problem (since I use the same few plugins across all my sites), but I haven’t found anything wrong – everything is fully updated.

This is the first time I’ve encountered something like this, so I’m not entirely sure what caused it. After deactivating and reactivating all the plugins, everything was back up and running.

Wordfence seems to be working now, but it was strange that it deactivated itself without any changes on my part; and strangely only the Wordfence plugin was deactivated.

    Anyway, thanks again!
