• Hi there, I’m new to wordpress so please bare with me…

I had some difficulty with my old wordpress page and ended up deleting everything and starting from scratch. Everything was working fine until I tried to change the theme and now all I get is:

The website cannot display the page
    HTTP 500
    Most likely causes:
    ?The website is under maintenance.
?The website has a programming error.

I’ve tried refreshing, switching to another theme etc. but nothing seems to work.

What the hey is going on and how can I fix it?

    Thanks

  • hey,

it could be that the theme you put changes the permalinks…

i had a problem with permalinks and i used to get the same error till i kept it to the defaults settings…

check your permalinks settings under the settings tab….

i’m too not a PHP coder (though a Java Coder) but i was facing the same problem….

    hope this solves your problem…..

The permalinks are on the default setting….that’s what I want right?

I can still edit in the dashboard I just cannot view the actual website.

have you tried deactivating plugins too?

Okay, I deactivated the plugins (I only had the hello dolly one activated) still no dice….

    Anything else?

Thanks so much for your help

    hmm…all I got is…

-reupload the core files (wp-admin and wp-includes folders)
-checking settings in general (are urls correct)
    -talk to host

    hey,

is your site hosted on a windows sever or a linux server….

i had many problems with wordpress on my windows server….

but then when i shifted to linux everything worked perfectly….

and who is your hosting provider right now????

I’m hosted on verio right now and it is a Windows server. Is linux really better?

This may seem like a stupid question but what are the core files, where do I find them and how do I reupload them?

linux is DEFINITELY better for wordpress, and many other software packages. If you have an option to, and you aren’t too far into your website, I would recommend a switch

Core files are obtained from a fresh download of WP, here: https://www.ads-software.com/download/

it’s the files in the wp-includes and wp-admin folder, NOT wp-content

and if you are too far in developing your website download all the files from an ftp program like filezilla and make a switch….

true…I guess your DB wouldn’t be affected eh?

but an export may be in order if necessary
