• I love WordPress. I do WordPress sites for a living. I know the platform well, and I come from a background of coding html/css sites in notepad and Dreamweaver. I have to say that as great as WordPress is the media manager is absolutely awful. It is without a
doubt one of the most awful, horrible, inept, inadequate, pathetic pieces of software I’ve ever seen. It’ absolutely bewildering how such a robust platform has such a completely incompetent, incomplete, inefficient, largely useless interface for such a critical part of the user experience. I literally find it bewildering.

    1. No folders. I know, it’s a DB, who cares, there should absolutely be folders, unlimited levels of nesting, etc. I manage sites with 5k + images. It’s utterly absurd not to have a folder structure for organization. It’s completely insane. Sorry, tags, searching, etc. is a very poor substitute. A massive waste of time.

    2. 20 items per page and only a post.php hack to increase. Are you friggin kidding me? This must be a joke.

    3. Tiny thumbs in the insert dialog. Completely useless.

    etc., etc., etc ad infinitum

Using the WP media manager is like trying to do a rubik’s cube blindfolded in a straightjacket buried under ten feet of sand.

Sorry to be so reserved and conservative in my critique. I definitely held back considerably.

  • Well the developers don’t seem too care about that. The “Enhanced Media Library” is an option to work with.

It offers the possibility to create taxonomies like categories which will act like a folder. When writing a new post, there is a new dropdown with all the categories. But you have to create categories and opload the images/PDFs etc. in thos categories before wrting.

But it is fascinating that a blog system, who wants so hard to be a content management system, doesn’t even think about changing the meia manager to a form which all real content management systems already have since many years.

Well they might have their reasons

Adding my two cents on the 3.9.1 media situation, which I am finding to be a superbly inconvenient, dumbed down and intensely frustrating experience.

One example: after adding an image to the media library, I added it to post and it’s getting auto inserted as a square thumbnail rather than original rectangle shape. I changed it to the specs I wanted. Shifted it to the right. Changed my mind, shifted it to the left, and it went back to thumbnail. WTF. It actually changed the source image I had inserted back to the auto generated thumbnail version.

I MUCH PREFERRED the previous image editor accessible in the post where I could change aspect ratio, left/ right. I get that you’re trying to make it as easy as possible, but could there please be a version of “super assist” vs “more control” ? Please?

Thank you. Otherwise, WP has been awesome and I love its ease of use.

They really don’t care at all and they don’t even understand that this system isn’t flawless.

    Who cares, I use Joomla.

Much better and more convenient, comfortable and not more complicated than Joomla.

At least I have the option to create folders, subfolders and find those folders in the editor as well.

The media manager in Joomla is adult while the media manager in WordPress is NO media manager.

But at most hosters, which offer on-click-installs, WordPress in in the category “Blog Systems” while Joomla can be found under “Content Management Systems”.

WordPress wants so badly to be a CMS but it is still an indolescent one. If it was a REAL CMS, multilingual sites wouldn’t be such a pain to realize.

Joomla has multilingual in the core and can be realized quickly without external plugins. The most convenient solutiin for WordPress seems to be a multisite solution. How inconvenient for clients when you have to tell them that they have to maintain two separate websites.

That is another VERY BAD flaw of WordPress. The internet is NOT one language and more and more sites need to be multilingual. But, like I said before, people can’t be bothered.

But nobody just thinks about improving the media manager and to implement multilinguality in the core.

They are just pissed off when one critisizes the holy system.

This is a 9 month old topic referencing WordPress 3.6!

@maafwob: If you want to use Joomla, please do so. WordPress != Joomla and vice versa.

And on that note, I think it is well past time to close this topic.
