theme as this

I’m working on my blog and I’d like to manage the up-coming events as this site does:
https://www.circolomagnolia.it

As u can see the first event is the closest. The 5 others are listed in a bar below.
how can I do that?
Is it depending by the theme or a pluigin (such as event calendar 3) or both??
I’m new in WP and I’d really appreciate some help..
