Theme Competition Thought…

  • How about having a theme competition for professional themes, themes which are not necessarily released under GPL / CC licenses. These themes will not be available for download but you can definitely get some ideas from them.

    Why?
    It would allow us to find the new and cool themes people are implementing with WordPress. It would also allow professional theme developers to showcase their work and possibly gain some link-love, visitors and customers.

    Any sponsors?

    Thoughts?

  • To be honest, that sounds kind of pointless and a waste of time. No one is going to sponsor something that no one but money charging designers benefit from. No one is going to take interest if they don’t get themes to use, and no one is going to submit themes to a contest with no interest and no sponsors

    How about some “money charging designers” (makes it sound like an ugly phrase) sponsoring it (for their own good and making more “money”)?

    At least they can get ideas from themes, even if they don’t get to copy-paste it. Personally I think that will be incentive enough for me. I kind of grow tired seeing tons of philanthropic, yet pointless themes without concerns for usability and harping only on coolness factor ??

    That stated view is enough for me to holler a resounding No from my virtual rooftop.

    Fwiw, I believe the original intent of the theme competitions was to provide incentive and encouragement to the people that work, how did you put it?, philanthropically???!!!??, to provide themes for software that is free.

    While I dont disagree with anyone selling their themes, I certainly dont think it needs to be encouraged, especially when its coupled with an arrogant attitude like the one you suggested above.

    as for holding a competition with the sole purpose of getting inspiration, there are already plenty of nicely designed websites…it’s not like there’s a shortage of inspiration
