I moved a site twice, and both times, I had to go back and redo all the settings in Theme Options. I can’t remember if I had to redo background, header, etc.

ETA: I also had to tell it to use the custom menu.

What I do when I change domains is to go into the database and change the all the URLs.

Any input is appreciated as I’m getting ready to move another site from a test server to a live server.

    Thanks!

  • It’s sad that a smooth move is not built in to core WP. Moving sites between dev, staging & production is a common occurrence.

You can’t always be restoring URLs manually (I have one MU site with 1000+ urls). Depending on the theme I suspect you may not always be able to restore a URL manually. That would be a theme problem but the whole thing is a source of brittleness.

Moving WordPress does talk about the serialized URL problem. The best solution is the search and replace script, also mentioned in the guide.

Changing site URL ought to be a built-in, one step procedure.

This plugin may help make that process much easier WordPress Move or try this one WP Migrate DB.

Note: I haven’t used these plugins myself, just trying to help future visitors to this thread.

Chip, thank you for this tip. Going from https://www.url.com to dev.url.com works, because the domains are the same length, but going from dev.url.com to staging.url.com did not for the reasons you cited above. Another easy solution if you are doing something like I am – make it stg.url.com or something the same length and just skip all this!
