• I’ve been using WordPress for quite a few years, but I’ve never really gotten in to theme development. I generally download free themes and mildly modify, or use a program to generate themes.

My employer would like to start using WordPress in our site development, so I’d like to dig into building themes from the ground up to help me understand WP better, and how it works.

What tools are favored for WP theme development? I’m using Dreamweaver CS5 for my normal HTML/PHP work, and am comfrtable in both the Design and Code views. Are there plugins for that program, or other editors, that folks favor?

  • There are some fairly good tutorials on Lynda.com using DreamWeaver CS5. Unfortunately, WP 3.1.2 doesn’t work with CS5. I’m searching trying to find some work around with DreamWeaver. Earlier versions of WP do work within CS5.

The hands-down best development environment for WordPress Themes is the lowly text editor – preferably one with syntax highlighting.

TextPad comes with some nice php/css/html syntax highlighting. I wouldn’t be without it.
